Ok, lets have an open discussion on a very tough Hawkeye. I will admit that I don't know much about basketball, so here's my uneducated 2 cents.
If Matt is shooting soooo poorly (1-10 from 3 today), why do we have him out there? He's obviously not anywhere near normal, is he a liability on the team on offense? I saw that he had a pretty good stat line otherwise, with rebounds and I think 5 steals. So, is he out there for other than scoring purposes?
Lastly, if he's shooting so poorly, when does Fran tell him to stop heaving it up there so much? I know he'll come around when he's 100%, but what do you do in the meantime?
Sorry, lots of questions, feedback would be appreciated.

He sat for a long stretch in the 2nd half and then was in at crunch time and did good things down the stretch...steals, etc.

He's a shooter, he has to keep shooting.
They need to start dropping next week however.

i kinda agree. however, we'll have some tight games coming up against UNI and ISU and can't afford to have these kind of shooting nights against them. i'm sure he'll be back to normal by conference time though.

I agree that he has to keep shooting. They will start dropping soon. It's good that he is playing so many minutes too, once his hand is fully healed he'll be fine. I'm not too worried about him. I still don't get why he had the ball in his hands at the end of the game against Wake though. Fran clearly knew he wasn't 100%.

Didnt he start really slow last year too. I seem to remember a year when Brody Boyd was ice cold for the longest time.

Matt is a 35% 3-pt shooter on his career.
Gatens first 8 games last year from behind the arc:10-37 27%
This year he is 5-29 17% coming off a hand injury.

Thanks for the numbers. Matt will pick it up once he is fully healed.

I was actually pleased with his play and you're right I think he was out there for other than 3 pt shooting. He was still 6-15 (not great) from the floor for 14 pts but had 5 assists and 5 steals.

They coaches and Matt said that they thought every 3 was going in so I think they just continue to want him to shoot. I believe he was still wearing his brace today which he should get off soon and then just have to tape it up.

Im not worried about matt, he'll get his shot back. Don't forget that he shot over 40% from 3 his freshman year. Just gotta get healed up.

Coach Fran in his post-game comments said that Gatens had his best practice ever the day before the game. Said he was making everything.

The shots will start falling for Gatens. We need him in there.

They need to get Marble more minutes. I think they will
