Matt Gatens - 2nd Team Big Ten

well-deserved! congrats Matt, and if you could light up the cheatin Illini for 34 or so it would be greatly appreciated.
 
3rd team by the coaches? White not unanimous all-Freshman team? Perhaps this will put a giant chip on the shoulder of every player and lead to a deep run in the BTT.
 
Third team is a joke in my opinion. He deserved much more. The stretch he has had was a great way to close out his senior season.
 
I don't think it would have been a huge stretch to say he could/should have made all-defense. The team's defense sucked, but no one shooting guard can make a team's defense good, no matter how good of a defender he is. A dominating shot blocker and rebounder in the paint is the only individual who can make that kind of impact. Long story short: our defense sucked, but it sure as hell wasn't Gatens' fault.

I agree. I thought for sure Matt would be first team or at worst second team by coaches. A little shocked.
 
Gatens had a ton of steals, lets not overlook his defense he was a very bright spot for Iowa in that regard. Congrats Matt! Well Deserved but the Coaches WTH!!!

Sorry to disagree but Matt made tremendous strides on the defensive end this season. If he would have had Fran for all 4 years who knows how good he could have been. He deserved to be on one of the defensive teams.

I thought the coaches would have voted Gatens to a higher team than the media but it was the opposite. Crean, Bo, Weber and Chambers should have had him at least 2nd team, if the coaces do their own voting.

As for the defensive team, who do you take off to put Gatens on?

Craft- no
Gasser- you could, although I cant argue with Wisky having a guy on this team
Green-no
Oladipo- no
Frazier- no

I can argue w/ Wisconsin having a player on that team. It's a smoke and mirrors defense. Not any great defenders on that team, esp Gasser. Yes, I would most certainly take Gatens over Gasser on that team. I'd take Paul on that team over Gatens, though.

That is kind of like when people thought Iowa was a good defensive team under Lickliter.

I am not sure how Olidipo is on the team...Watford ended up guarding the best offensive player on most teams Indiana played, including Burke when they played Michigan.

Any team that Frazier was put on, I don't get...I have a few reasons, but it is like the Talor Battle effect...solid player on a terrible team. Did anyone other than Frazier average more than 10 ppg...just curious? If he is so good, why wasn't PSU better with him and Battle...just throwing it out there. Lastly, people talk about him leading the BIG in assists, so did Cartwright last season...on a poor team, how many of those came when games were simply over?

Wisconsin is not a great defensive team, getting back to the original point...they limit offensive touches by taking the air out of the ball with their clock management. The one thing they do well is go after loose balls, they get more 50/50 balls than anyone, so that also helps limit touches by other teams.
 
Gatens lit up Gasser and Olapido for 30 and 33 points respectively.
Either Gatens is 1st team all big ten for beating all-defensive players for 30+ points,or they are not all defensive,and Gatens is....he shut down the leading scorer in the league,shurna,for 9 points.
