Matchups against Wisky

How would you match up man to man with them?

Basabe on Leuer
Cole on Nankivil
May on Jarmusz
Gatens on Gasser
Cartwright on Taylor

Maybe you switch the 2 bigs but I like Basabe's length and quickness against the versatile Leuer.

Or are we better off going zone? The badgers shoot the ball very well and we all know how the Hawks have struggled with perimeter D this year. Thoughts?

This is probably how they will match up,unless they want to protect Melsahn from foul trouble vs Leuer.
Bottom line...we might win one matchup...Gatens on Jarmuz.
Wisky is playing as well as anyone in the league right now...maybe better than OSU even.
Nankavil is automatic from the arc...and Leuer is close. Taylor is the best pg in the country for my money.

The only way iowa can win is to shoot very hot from the arc...get out of box fast, get the crowd into it...and hope they have an off nite.

Let's move away from the ledge here......

First off, Wisconsin is 1-3 in the league on the road. Certainly not world-beaters away from the Kohl Center and with the exception of Northwestern, who simply had one of those crazy shooting nights, we've battled everyone tough at home.

Second of all, in conference games, we are shooting a better % than Wisconsin is and our schedule has been much tougher than theirs has been. Wisconsin is also a terrible offensive rebounding team, which is one of our strengths.

Wisconsin does 4 things very well:

1. Protects the ball.
2. Makes free throws.
3. Makes 3 pointers.
4. Dictates tempo.

Of those 4 strengths however, 3 of them play into our strengths. First, we lead the league in steals, so if we can get them to turn it over more than their average, that will bode well for us. Second, we don't foul and put teams at the line, so if we can keep that up, we will negate that advantage. Third, we can dictate tempo as well, especially at home. What we lack at times, though, is consistently closing out on shooters and limiting opposition 3 pointers. However, the interesting thing to note is that we are smack in the middle in 3pt field goal % defense. I think what we tend to remember are the 2 games (NW and Michigan) where the 3's came raining down on us rather than the other games that we did respectable in.

So if we can manage to close out on their shooters, get some offensive rebound put-backs, and take advantage of our quickness on defense to force some steals, we've got a great chance of pulling this one out. The other thing that will be key is the crowd. We've got to get Carver filled and loud to make it tough on them.

I think Iowa throws May on Jordan Taylor.

I agree. May does a good job guarding smaller, quicker guards. His size and athleticism allow him to contest shots even when he is beaten off the dribble. I believe we had May on Talor Battle at least for a while.

He's just the type of guy you want on the other teams most athletic player regardless of position.

I think you will see Iowa start out in a man to man defense but they will switch it up as they have done most of the season. Changing defenses and staying out of foul trouble will be the key to keeping this a close game.

Not a bad idea to put May on Taylor and Gatens on Jarmuz, with Bryce on Gasser....at least for awhile if Taylor starts lighting up Bryce.

Taylor is a very deceptively strong quick player who can really shoot...very worried about stopping him.

I hope you are right. But as you point out,we depend on turnovers to score, and Wisky is the nations best at not giving them up....I do not think that bodes well for the Hawks.
As for the free throw line...again, hope you are right ,but Wisky is very good at getting to the line and then making them.

Hope the crowd can be the diff. They have lost at MSU,PSU and at PU...tough venues. Hope CHA is also.

My biggest fear is that the refs get involved and we pick up a bunch of non-existent fouls early. I think if we can keep our starters on the floor, we can play with Wisconsin.
