Hawkeyes Rally Late, Walked-Off in 9th at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- In a game where the University of Iowa baseball team trailed 6-2 through eight innings, the Hawkeyes rallied to score four runs in the ninth to tie the game before losing, 8-6, in walk-off fashion Thursday night at Bob “Turtle’ Smith Stadium.

The loss drops Iowa to 30-20 overall, 12-10 in Big Ten play. The Hawkeyes need a win or Northwestern loss to clinch a Big Ten Tournament berth for the sixth consecutive season.

Down 6-2, heading to the ninth inning, Iowa forced Maryland to go to the bullpen after starter Hunter Parsons, who tossed 127 pitches, plunked senior Tanner Wetrich to lead things off.

Following Wetrich, senior Chris Whelan and sophomore Izaya Fullard loaded the bases with a walk and a single. Wetrich scored on a double play off the bat of junior Austin Martin.

Down to their final out, the Hawkeyes strung together four consecutive hits to tie the game. Junior Ben Norman, who finished the game 3-for-5, drove in the game-tying RBI with the count full.

“Everyone was stepping up,” head coach Rick Heller said. “We were patient and everyone was making sure they got their pitch. We had two bunt hits in the inning. That’s how you give yourself a chance to comeback with some clutch hits.”

Iowa left two runners on second and third to head to the bottom of the ninth tied at six.

It was Maryland’s leadoff man AJ Lee -- who was a problem all day for the Hawkeyes, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs -- who ended the game with a walk-off home run to left field off junior Grant Leonard. It was Leonard’s first home run allowed all season.

Leonard was the fourth Hawkeye pitcher to enter the game. Senior Cole McDonald started the game, throwing five innings of six-hit ball, allowing four earned runs. He walked zero batters, but labored all game -- throwing 33 pitches in the first inning.

Maryland scored two runs in the first inning on two hits and added two more on two-run home run by Maxwell Costes. It was 4-0 Terrapins before the Hawkeyes scored a run in the fifth and sixth to show life.

Iowa left six runners on base from the fifth inning to the eighth, while Maryland extended its lead to 6-2 through eight.

The Hawkeyes outhit the Terrapins, 14 to 10, including five in Iowa’s ninth-inning rally. The Hawkeyes left 11 runners on base.

QUOTING HEAD COACH RICK HELLER

“Our guys didn’t quit fighting. The last inning rally was awesome against a really good arm.

"I really liked what I saw from our offense today – up and down the lineup. We played a good game defensively. It’s disappointing when you fight back like that and don’t get a win, but I am proud of our effort and proud of our guys.”

OF NOTE…

  • With a bunt single in his last at-bat, Fullard extended his hitting streak to eight games and his on-base streak to 18 games.
  • Norman (3-for-5), Martin (2-for-5), Zeb Adreon (3-for-4), and Tanner Padgett (2-for-5) all recorded multi-hit games, while Norman added his seventh multi-RBI game of the season.
  • Senior Jason Foster settled the Hawkeye pitching staff down with two innings of middle relief, allowing only one run.

Iowa Drops Game 2 at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Iowa baseball team fell behind 2-0 after one and 5-1 after three before falling, 8-4, to Maryland in game two of the series on Friday night at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.

Iowa has lost four straight games to fall to 30-21 (12-11) on the season. Iowa needs a win or a Northwestern or Ohio State loss to clinch a spot in the Big Ten Tournament.

Sophomore Cam Baumann (4-4) was handed the loss in a shaky outing that lasted only 3 1/3 innings. The southpaw walked five and gave up six hits before freshman Duncan Davitt pitched 4 1/3 innings of dominant relief.

Davitt allowed one inherited runner to score in the fourth and sat down eight straight Terrapins from the fifth to the eighth inning. The Indianola, Iowa, native tied a career-high with six strikeouts to only two walks and two hits with his only blemish being a solo home run.

“Duncan Davitt came in and did a tremendous job out of the bullpen,” head coach Rick Heller said. “It was his best outing of the year. He gave us a chance, we just couldn’t pull it off.”

Offensively, Iowa scored a run in the third, fifth, seventh, and ninth innings, but could never put together a big inning to mount a comeback.

Senior Tanner Wetrich went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI from the nine hole, sophomore Izaya Fullard went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and freshman Brendan Sher, who started at third base, scored two runs.

QUOTING HEAD COACH RICK HELLER

“It didn’t start out well for us. We got out to a rough start on the mound and gave them five runs in the first three innings to fall behind. (Zach) Thompson was good tonight; he kept us off stride. We were able to fight back a little bit.

“We gave up some freebies in the first three innings that led to a couple big innings and it cost us the game.”

OF NOTE…

• Iowa has never led in the first two game of the series.

• Fullard extended his hitting streak to nine games and on-base streak to 20 with a 2-for-3 effort.

Tanner’s Shine Offensively, Hawkeyes Swept by Terrapins

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Senior shortstop Tanner Wetrich had a game for the ages, blasting two game-tying home runs -- a three-run homer in the third and a grand slam in the eighth -- for seven RBIs, but it wasn’t enough as Maryland outlasted the University of Iowa baseball team, 10-8, on Saturday afternoon at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.

Wetrich wasn’t the only Tanner who was locked in offensively. Redshirt sophomore Tanner Padgett went 4-for-5 with a solo home run and two runs scored. Padgett’s four-hit day was his second of the season to become the first Hawkeye to record two four-hit games.

Iowa took its first lead of the series on Padgett’s solo home run in the top of the second, but fell behind 4-1 after three innings. Wetrich’s three-run blast to dead center briefly tied the game at four before Maryland took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the inning.

The Terrapins extended their lead to 8-4 through seven innings. With the bases loaded, Wetrich’s grand slam tied the game at eight in the top of the eighth. His fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh RBIs of the game gave Iowa a momentum boost and gave the Hawkeyes their second four-run comeback of the series. Senior Mitchell Boe was stranded at first base to end the frame.

In the bottom of the eighth, Maryland retook the lead on a Chris Alleyne double to right field off junior Grant Leonard, who received the loss, that scored two runs. Iowa trailed 10-8 heading to the ninth inning.

Redshirt sophomore Brett McCleary, who entered the game as a sub, led off the ninth with a double to left field, but he was stranded at second base after the next three Hawkeyes were retired. Iowa left seven runners on base.

From the start, Hawkeye pitchers struggled to get outs in key situations, allowing 13 hits -- seven for extra bases. Junior starting pitcher Grant Judkins lasted only three innings – his shortest outing of the season – allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks.

Out of the bullpen, Junior Trace Hoffman, sophomore Trenton Wallace, and Leonard all allowed at least one earned run in relief.

QUOTING HEAD COACH RICK HELLER

“It’s another tough loss for us. It’s disappointing how we pitched. We gave up runs in six of the eight innings. Every time we score, we’d go back out and couldn’t shut them down. We didn’t pitch well all weekend long and it continued today, unfortunately.

“Overall, we didn’t quit; we didn’t back down and kept fighting. The inability to make pitches when we needed to ultimately cost us.”

On Tanner Wetrich’s day:

“It’s great to see. He came through big time and picked us back up and made up (for his two errors) with a grand slam and a three-run homer. He had a great day at the plate.”

On Tanner Padgett’s day:

“He had a good day, too. He was getting on base and had four hits. He and Tanner were the guys that got it done today for us on offense. Those two did a nice job.”

OF NOTE…

· Wetrich was the first Hawkeye to eclipse five RBIs this season and first Iowa hitter with six or more RBIs since Matt Hoeg a year ago against Oklahoma State on May 5.

· Fullard had one hit today to extend his hitting streak to a team-best 10 games and his on-base streak to a team-best 21 games.

· No Hawkeye starting pitcher lasted more than five innings in the three-game series.

UP NEXT

The Big Ten Tournament starts on Wednesday, May 22 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska. The Hawkeyes are the No. 8 seed where they will face top-seeded Indiana at 5 p.m. (CT).

Talk about a collapse. #8 seed against Indiana. I hope they’re one and done
Double-elimination.

Indiana swept Iowa first Big10 series.
Maryland swept them last Big10 series and are on a 5 game losing streak and 6 of 7.

Indiana is the best team in the conference. Illinois is a very close second.

If anyone wants any hope, after getting swept by Indiana, Iowa turned around and swept Illinois the next series.

Iowa was looking at a two seed last weekend and was fortunate Minnesota beat NW today.

Iowa’s pitching has looked weak the last two weeks so I’m not expecting a long run.

What a disappointing collapse, I'm gonna miss making comparisons to other sports although they come to mind.

The good news is this season was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Hopefully they can make some noise in the BTT.
