Maryland is In; Rutgers to Follow

Lastly, how about the league drops the silly Legends and Leaders right about now? It’s the perfect cover for not having to admit a mistake.

For all the ones crying about how playing Rutgers or Maryland does not excite them, how about going back to playing Wisconsin and Illinois every year?

Sounds like each school is in for a considerable raise. The main thing I keep thinking about is if this will hurt Kirk's east coast pipeline in recruiting. We get a lot of kids over there who usually hold offers from Maryland and Rutgers. Now they can stay home and play in the B1G.

I'm with you, I really hope that happens. No more "protected rivalry" with Purdue.

I actually think it helps, the ones that want to stay home are going to regardless if Rutgers is in the B1G or not. But now with Maryland and Rutgers in the conference the coaches can now tell the parents of potential east coast recruits that they will be playing at these institutions at least once in their 4/5 years they attend Iowa.

That's a good way to look at it. I like it.

Nebby and Mizzou fans wanted out of the Big 12 so both of those school's fans were happy when they jumped ship. Maryland fans have no angst against the ACC so I can see why they would be pizzed. Maryland was a charter member of the ACC and like any school that has been around for a long time in a conference they developed rivalries. Now they are going to play 13 new schools on a regular basis.

You are right and I can understand the fans view point. They will come around once they see how big of a difference the extra revenue will be for their athletic department. Now instead of looking to cut programs they can now build them and make them better. Maryland could potentially double the amount of TV revenue they get and who knows the financial impact of the academic side being associated with being part of the CIC.

This is like a giant game of Risk. The conferences are the players and the colleges are the countries. The B1G just delivered a knockout blow to the Big East and left the ACC in a stupor. And if the rumblings are true that BC, UNC, or GaTech may be under consideration the ACC is about to get bushwhacked.

What would be very nice to see would be Maryland being able to bring the programs back that they recently had to cut as a result of the increase in revenue. Not sure what my feelings are about them coming up with enough funds to buy their way out of the conference, but having to cut a great deal of athletic programs recently due to finanacial issues. Would be great to see a happy ending for the programs that had to be sacrificed.

Please Please re-do the schedule asap and knock Wisky and OSU off schedule some more! Don't want to be 2-10 next couple years!

I say let's keep the name of the conference, which no longer makes any sense whatsoever, and rename the two divisions. There surely has to be names that are more appealing then "Leaders" and "Legends".

If Maryland and Rutgers start playing in 2014-2015, then next year's football schedule will be a one off with the road and home of Wisconsin-Ohio State

They will have to redo everything

These TV revenues are ridiculous. We're talking about amateur collegiate athletics, yet school and conference officials are having meetings at secret cabins in undisclosed locations, all in order to widen the conference's sphere of television markets, which now stretch from Lincoln to New York.

One of the main reasons I love college football is the tradition. Lose enough of them, and I'd rather spend my Saturdays doing something else, while watching a higher quality of football on Sundays.

Maryland is in the Big Ten and Rutgers is not far behind. Iowa and other Big Ten schools are gonna get paid more.

Jon

There is speculation that the Big Ten looked hard at Georgia Tech also. What is your honest guess, they stay at 14 or keep going? if they keep going? who?

thanks

Wallace Loh, the President of the University of Maryland, was the provost at the University of Iowa as recently as the fall of 2010. He also earned his undergrad from Grinnell College. Interesting. (Side note: he did fall asleep during a presentation I gave to the PCOA back in 2009...must have been dreaming about getting Maryland to the B1G. Can't say I blame him.)
