Maryland game thoughts

First off, Iowa was the dominate team even before the Dumus injury. With the Demus injury, Maryland's offense fell apart. They couldn't stop shooting themselves in the head. Turning the ball over 7 times put their defense in an impossible situation. Against a tired defense, Iowa's offense opened up the playbook. At one point, the offensive line ran two quarterback sneaks for touchdowns. For the most part Iowa's offensive line dominated the defense. Along with the turnovers, Maryland's lack of discipline killed them.

Maryland has had penalty problems all year largely due to a lack of discipline. Targeting, offensive line, interference penalties. Until they met Iowa they got away with the penalties. Maryland's lack of discipline showed itself on Iowa's drive early in the second quarter. Iowa is ahead 14-7 after the Demus injury. With the ball on their side of the 50 Iowa is facing a 3rd and long. Maryland penalty. Iowa gets three more plays. Again Iowa is stalling. Maryland penalty. This continues until Iowa is in the red zone. Touchdown. Thank you Maryland.

This game reminded me of the Northwestern game where Stanzi went down in the first quarter. Iowa opened the game with a touchdown. Northwestern's drive stalled. Iowa drives again. Stanzi get's hurt. Stanley replaces Stanzi. Iowa plays flat. They lose the game. Their unbeaten 9-0 record comes to an end. The difference between this game and the game with Maryland is that Iowa lost as a team. With Stanley in they had to limit the playbook. Maryland just fell apart as a team.

Petras once again showed the ability to drop the ball in a bucket on a long pass. Iowa loosened up Maryland's defense early with passes. Iowa got some good runs, made some good passes but once again it was the defense dominating. Iowa showed everyone they have receivers who can catch. Running backs who can run and a quarterback who can spread the ball around if he has time. There is a lot on film to keep Penn State busy this week.

While Iowa's offense isn't dominate or to a point where they scare people. They have to be respected. Iowa defense isn't perfect, but they are scary. If an opposing offense shows a weakness Iowa's defense will dominate them. Iowa's special teams, defense are as well coached as any in the country. They will capitalize on any mistake.

I think that James Vandenburg, not Stanley, but other than that agree.

Vandenberg was the last Iowa starting QB to not end up on an NFL roster. Between Christianson (2008) and current, he was the only one to not make at least a brief appearance on a roster.
Yep. I had some idiot on r/CFB go off on me for saying during the Maryland game thread that Petras had shown enough to me to say that he was better than Stanley, but that that wasn't a very high bar, and this guy was just dumbfounded that I could say that about an NFL Draft pick, despite the fact that he's not even on a practice squad this year. He's the worst quarterback we've had in 15 years not named Vandenberg. That's pretty wild, given the number of wins the Hawks had with him.

Reddit is a septic tank.

Generally you only get about 12 possessions during a game. If you turn it over a lot you can get blown out. I remember OSU had a lot of T/O against Iowa in that blowout.

I still think it is absolutely crazy in a span of like 9 minutes we scored 21 points (or was it 28) and maryland ran three plays

It was 28 points if you are counting the initial touchdown drive Iowa had after Maryland scored, they fumbled it right back to Iowa on the kickoff so Iowa scored 14 points before their offense could even get back on the field. Then when they did get on the field it was 1 play and an interception (another Iowa touchdown) and then 2 plays with another interception (another touchdown).
