"Don't be surprised if we see three tightends with Fant, Hochenson & Shaun Beyer on the field at the same time."

Scott Dochertman agreed with him during a local, live tv sports show in E. Iowa.

Fant and ISM on the outside and TJ/Beyer at TE. How are Beyer's hands doing?
I saw Beyer play a number of times his senior year at CR Kennedy a few years ago. He seemed to catch every pass thrown his way, he was incredible. He could leap as well, always beat the DB's covering him.

Without our starting tackles, Sutton Smith might be in the backfield so often that Stanley may not have time to throw (other than slants) and we may see RBs getting stopped before they hit the line of scrimmage.

Many moons ago, I coached at Kennedy. We had a young man named Tracy Crocker who started four years at Iowa at cornerback. I watched Beyer twice during his senior year at JFK and he is the second best player ever at JFK. I think he will be a force.

It's all a ruse. They put this out there so NIU practices all week against 2 and 3 TE sets and Iowa catches them off guard with the 5 WR sets.

The fun thing this year is that Iowa could trot out in 13 personnel with IKM, Hockenson, Beyer, Fant, and your choice of WR. They could then spread Fant, Beyer, and IKM out and go 4 wide with Hockenson in for protection/release. I am convinced that if Fant lined up exclusively as WR this year, he would be All-B1G caliber. IKM is one of the fastest guys on the team and has flashed receiving skills (spent some time in the slot at kids' day scrimmage). I don't know exactly what Beyer will bring, but he started out here at WR, and he seems to have a little buzz.

I would be surprised if we don't see Fant lined up outside more often... Especially if Beyer is looking good and can lineup with TJ. The versatility with the formations and matchups we can create are almost unlimited. Giving Stanley the ability to get to the LOS with time to scan what the D is showing and call a play that exploits them will give us a huge huge huge edge. The table is set just gotta go do it.

It seems to me like fant would be a waste if used to block at the line at all. He needs to line up split out exclusively

I knew that also_OBVIOUS no? Treat Noah as a wide out. Then split him waay wide pleese.Last part Cap decides. One can hope huh? Do not hold your breath for CAP splitting Noah wide.GO HAWK PLAYERS...

I disagree. The full benefit of a TE like Gronk (and hopefully what Fant becomes this season) is that they are such good receivers, you have to match up with a DB. But if you adjust personnel to get the extra DB on the field, they can line up and maul you in the run game. That is the difference between just being a good, big-bodied receiver and being a truly elite TE.

It is akin to the big man in basketball who can step out and hit 3s. If that is all he can do, then you just match him up with a wing and go about your business. But if he has the skill set to hit 3s AND "play big" (crash the boards, score in the post), he is an impossible match-up. Hopefully this year Fant proves to be an impossible match-up.

Must find out if he can catch and run with db and linebacker by him. His leaping ability plus speed.Spreads out BOX..Need that...

I like your thought process, but hockenson and wieting could fill that roll while fant moves all over the field.

Fant Movement opens box...I Keep posting similiar thoughts cause Mr Akrum could have done that last. No confidence in CAP's flexability to consider change.

Wouldn't shock me at all.

Beyer has the potential to be a real weapon, and I'm completely convinced that Brian's plan this season is to display several new concepts in this offense.

Will it work? Time will tell, but I would bet money we are going to see some interesting wrinkles, several of which he'll save for Wisconsin.
