Marco Lainez Commits to Iowa Football

This is a great get for the 2023 class!

I'm a little surprised we haven't gotten a few more commits after the weekend visits. Signing day is rapidly approaching.

I think some of the guys that visited want to announce on signing day. There will be other commits. I think we eventually get Hall, Trader, Van Kekerix, Crawford. Real possibility of Allen too

I'm hoping we also get Entringer.

What makes this a great get? Would prefer dual threat capabilities.

If a qb with any sort of speed and moves comes to Iowa he is considered a dual threat and would probably add some qb run capabilities.

And some qbs dont look the part but are ok at it. IIRC Stanzi in 2008 on the final winning drive to upset PSU had two big QB runs. One might have been a scramble but the other looked like a called rollout and run. And once he got 2 steps in he was moving pretty well.

So, will Brian Ferentz/KOK/Daddy....whoever....will they take this 4 star athlete and make him look like a 1 star when it is all said and done?

3 yard routs and a cloud of dust?

Or will he hold the clipboard having fans chant "Marco Polo" trying to find out where he is and when he is going to come into the game?

Before he got hurt, Bethard could kill you with his legs. Ask ISU

Just need a guy who can go through his progressions and if there is nothing there he can tuck it and run to keep drives alive, keep the chains moving.

Once KF retires all bets are off... KF's successor may want a more RPO heavy offense. If that is the case you are going to need a dual threat guy.

Oh no doubt CJB was dual threat. He was hurt in the 2015 Pitt game but still legged out that crucial qb run to get into last second winning FG position by Koehn.

And he had those two huge runs from inside the iowa 5 yard line clear out to midfield at ISU in 2015.

Yes, year in and year out the hawks are hurt way more by mobile qbs than the other way around. Many of jNW's upsets and wins against Kirk have been because of not being able to contain a mobile qb.

I think I saw the '23 class is now ranked 12th overall. Way too early, but nice some fruit from recruiting efforts.

Ranked 12th in all of FBS D1? Wow. I just barely watch recruiting because to me until they are enrolled and practicing they aint here yet.

Wish I could recall the source, but I know I read one that specifically called him a “dual threat” QB. I know others referred to him as pro style. I also saw one that rated him as #11 nationally.

He had 500-some rushing yards last year. No Lamar Jackson, but mobile and nifty on the run if you have seen his highlights.

High school stats are pretty sketchy when looking at them for college potential.

A LOT of high schools play full schedules of horrible football teams. It's not like basketball where D1 recruits are usually playing on and against against elite level AAU teams.

Like SE Valley where Graves comes from. Obviously not taking anything away from him because the kid is an absolute monster, but they play in a garbage conference and district other than Odebolt Arthur, and they never play any competition until they get to state. It's easier to look like Reggie White playing there than it would be against a bunch of 4A private schools.
