Man crush on Mike Quade

As a lifelong cubs fan, and a disappointed one at that, I was one of few that was very excited to see the Cubs trade DLee, Theriot, and Lilly. I was also one of very few that loved the hire of Quade. Don't get me wrong, I love Ryno and want him to manage the Cubs one day, but I loved the hire. why? because it was something different for the cubs. Bucking the trend. It wasn't another high priced manager with high expectations.

Now, what has Quade done to make it a full blown man crush? many things, but the latest is name Dempster the opening day starter. Yes, BigZ had done it for 6 years (how has that worked out, last year was a 14-5 drubbing in the ATL) and he may get mad about it. Quade doesn't care. This guy is a player's manager and I love it. Mike Quade doesn't care about contracts (aka don't expect to see Soriano every day (HOORAY) and expect to see Colvin get some time. I love his approach. He's no non-sense and he knows the game. He deserved the break he got.

Now, I don't expect the Cubs to win the WS, but I do expect them to be competitive in the NL central and be a much improved team over last year.

GO CUBS.

39 days til opening day.

I'm also excited that he decided to go a different way on opening day. Great call by Quade!

The only thing in your post I disagree with is that I expect them to win the world series this year. I thought that's what your suppossed to expect as a Cubs fan. This is our year!

Haha, I've learned to temper my expectations.

I wouldn't get too excited about Colvin. When he gets more time, expect a lot of pop outs.

Why, when he gets more time he should get more consistent and a better hitter.

Enjoy the honeymoon while it lasts. Good for Quade, but Sandberg earned the job. He's a blue collar Hall of Famer if there ever was one. He went down to A ball and rode the buses to Cedar Rapids and Clinton and Wausau. He worked his way up the managerial ladder and was Triple A Manager of the Year last year. Joe Girardi didn't do that.

Sandberg was snubbed by a GM who should have been fired years ago. Hendry is a joke, and he and Quade are unlikely to make it to the end of the season. Quade led the Cubs to a resounding 24-13 record the last few weeks of the season...against other teams' Triple A call-ups. Excellent reason for giving the guy the job over Sandberg.

I was a Cub fan from 1958 until 2003. Now I love to laugh at the whole franchise. It's mathematically impossible for the Cubs to have gone more than a century without winning a WS, yet they have anyway. Don't expect that to change in your lifetime.

1. He clearly did not, or he'd have it.
2. Not one of those teams is a Cubs minor league affiliate.
3. Why? Hendry has made some bad moves, but overall he hasn't been terrible. He isn't Omar Minaya.
4. Never mind that the Cubs were playing their own AAA call-ups, right?

You act like Quade hasn't paid his dues like Sandberg did; Quades managerial career (albeit entirely in the minors) has lasted a hell of a lot longer than Sandbergs did. He's been with the Cubs (the big club) since - I think 2008, making him infinitely more familiar with the roster and day-to-day operations of the team than Sandberg. To say that Quade hasn't earned the job simply isn't true.

Obviously, nobody knows right now if it was the right move. It's only a 2 year deal, so the leash is pretty short. All that being said, we've seen how the Cubs have done with the last two "designer managers" they've had. Lets see how they do by going a different route.

Not hiring Sandberg is the best move Hendry has made in a long time. Sandberg managed in the minor leagues for three whole seasons. Well believe it or not Quade didn't just show up on the bench after Pinella quit. He's managed in the minors for over 20 years, so luckily he meets your qualifications of having been on many bus rides too. He also won Minor League Manager of the year three times. He's also been on a major league staff. But yes he did nothing to earn the job besides go 24-13 at the end of last season.

There's so many ignorant Cubs fans out there so in love with Sandberg the player that they can't see how he could possibly be snubbed after three whole years of work. I'm glad he's not the manager now and hopefully he never will be.

The biggest mistake will be not hiring Sandberg. Count on it! Jim Hendry is a freaking joke going back to my Creighton days with him there.

You sir are an *******

I think hiring Sandberg would've been fine, but if he failed then how do you fire him. The next 2 years are supposed to be rebuilding why not give Quade a shot. By the way I think he'll do more than just manage a rebuild but that's not the point. As one poster said 4 years in the minors, where you weren't an amazing coach to Quade who coached 20+ and was loved by his MLB players last year. The guy deserves a shot, and if you think his shot is not as important as Ryno's you're simply foolish.

Hendry was in a tough position...idk if he made the right call or not...I'm not expecting much from Quade...I feel that the 24-13 was just the result of a team rallying at the end of the year under the interim coach with an "us against the world" mentality. Hopefully he will be ok, but I would put money that the Cubs are going through the search in a couple years again. But Quade paid his dues so it's whatever.

But as a Cubs fan I am obligated to throw in the "This is our year obviously" :)

If this thread proves anything, it's that true Cub fans are as poor readers, as poor thinkers and as delusional as most other third graders...or ISU grads.

I cant stand fans like you. I could never understand unbecoming a fan of your favorite sports teams.

Hey you have to take extreme measures when your favorite team snubs a guy who spent three entire seasons riding buses in the minors. He's been to Clinton and Cedar Rapids damn it! On a god damn bus! He deserves this job.

No joke, I mean 3 whole years on a bus, and he only moved up to triple A. Man it only took Quade 20+ years. Oh the inhumanity!

And did you know that Quade only went 24-13 against triple A prospects, while Sandberg didn't even win the PCL with Triple A kids. I don't understand it, Sandberg's coaching resume is so much stronger.

And the Cubs took 3 out of 4 from San Diego who was trying to get into the playoffs. I'm sure they were only playing triple A guys.

Good post Farmer.

The Cubs don't have the goods to contend with the Cards and Reds, let alone the Brew-Crew. I would imagine, and hope, that they can finish ahead of the Pirates. No manager can change any of that.
