Lot's more free throws than our opponents

Seems like we've been getting many more free throws than our opponents. I'm not sure why? Maybe some of the many experts on HN can explain why?

Imo I think its because gatens and marble especially are always looking to draw the fouls early and we seem to get into the bonus early in the half. Our team is very good about drawing the foul if we can't make the bucket.

I would add White to that list as well as he is another player getting to the line and is not afraid to take his man to the basket.

Fran had indicated shortly after he got hired that he planned to coach a team that shot a lot more free throws than the opponent...Seems to be working a little better this year. Might not see it much in the B1G this year but the seeds have been sowed.

We have been the aggressor the last 3 games and put Drake, UCA and BSU on their heels a bit. Marble has been extremely consistent scoring and distributing, which sets others up for good shots / potential to draw fouls. Gatens and others are curling around screens and ball faking vs. shooting 3's and Basabe has returned to form down low. Teams that play good D and share the ball tend to get fouled a lot. We will find out Wednesday if this will carry over to big ten competition.

It's always nice to see this kind of stat.. Two made FT's are just as good as a made jumper, dunk, etc. Plus it never hurts to get your opponent in foul trouble..

I remember a game a few years ago under Lick (against Drake IIRC) where the team didn't shoot a single FT the entire game.. For the first time in who knows how long.

Coach Alford always said an indicator of success for a basketball team would be to make more free throws in a game than an opponent attempts.

Realizing that's not a philosophy that is only adopted (or originated) by SA...it's still a good standard to aspire to.

the biggest reason the last few games has been because we are at home. It is amazing how many more free throws the home team shoots on average in NCAA basketball. And of course, you get a few more free throw shots with this style being aggressive than you would with Lick's toss it around the perimeter until the shot clock is up and heave a 3 offense.

Making more free throws than the other team attemps was a trait of almost every team under Mr. Davis. Seems to work quite well.

You are probably right about the home team FT's. Last night we had a close game and in the last 2 minutes they were fouling to get the ball back. We were not missing and it is automatic after a made shot to foul. Take away the last two minutes and the FT's were not far apart. I really wonder though, about your point, if anyone has ever done a study regarding home and away FT's.

Getting them and making are two different stats. At one point last night they flashed on the board that we were shooting 83%. Of course we missed the next two I think. Marble was a coin toss last year at the line, but he has been $$ so far. I really like the fact that our TO: Assist ratio is positive. This team plays at a faster pace, but isn't wild with the ball.

sorry the homerism won't work the improved FT shooting help a lot
during the 1 & 1 miss the 1st and you don't get a 2nd that alone gets you a total of 6 extra FT
you do realize most of the time the player is fouled in the act of shooting which results in a minimum of 2 ft's
if you listened to the game Dolph mentioned that the 1st 4 fouls in the 2nd half on the Hawks resulted in 8 ft's because they were in the act of shooting
the game against the slide and flop panthers was clearly homereism Iowa barely got to the FT line because they barely got into the 1 & 1 in either half
