...has anyone seen the new college football imperialism map?! Man, we are taking over the US!
SB Nation started a new thing this year called The Imperialism Map. Essentially, every team starts out with land around their own stadium and as each team wins, they take over land that their opponent had collected; conversely they give it to their opponent after every loss.I don't understand what I am looking at...it's lovely.
I kind of get what it's supposed to show, but why do we have a couple pockets out east. Can anybody explain what this is to show?
We own the part of the east because OSU beat PSU and took all the land they had won up to that point (PSU campus, Pitt, etc). We then took all that land when we beat OSU...I kind of get what it's supposed to show, but why do we have a couple pockets out east. Can anybody explain what this is to show?
Although its mostly just for fun, it is kind of telling. Wisconsin is undefeated yet look how little land they have. Because they haven't beaten land owners. If Iowa beats Nebraska, we don't get anything because Nebraska doesn't own any land. Oregon took it and its been passed around the Pac 12 since then. If you don't beat a land owner, you get nothing.
True, which means the consolidation of all land to the NC happens really suddenly at the end. It also is a decent tell of conference dominance if the majority of land sits in one conference.Yeah what kinda sucks is once conference play starts, all the land is permanently owned by each conference until the bowl season.

because we beat Ohio State, we get everything they owned the week before. Basically you keep what you kill until someone else takes it away from you. So we got everything Ohio state had since they went on their win streak...and everything their opponents had.
Make sense?
Yeah, good point. DUH on me. And even if you don't have that situation where a team doesn't go to a bowl game, lets say Iowa wins out including the bowl game.... Alabama doesn't get our land, we won't ever play them.Even after the NC game the title winner won't own the whole country. Lets say Iowa wins their next 2 games and then loses to nebraska. Nebraska will own the entire upper midwest. Then lets say Nebraska doesn't even make it to a bowl game...they'll end the season owning the most land.
So its fun to look at but also kinda stupid
