Losing our 4 best players

A lot of very good comments. We have no choice with Wadley and Jewell leaving so that is what it is. The O Line will lose its leader who calls out blocking assignments which is a big loss and dont forget Welch. Big losses but the tackles should and probably will be the anchors. The hawks seem to find and make really good centers and guards and this group needs to get better anyway. They will be working as a group off season as much as they can. Devoted.

If the Oline gets better then Young and IKM will be above avg at running back and IKM may have the burst to give us big plays like Wadley although cant totally replace Wadley's ability to create big plays when they arent there.

Very concerned at linebacker but Hockaday looked decent in 2016 for a game and a half. Plus I really think P Parker is starting to see the light about having a decent sized safety type playing one of the Lbkr spots, Kirksey was 220 his junior year and maybe as a SR. Hooker could be a wildcard playing a hibred safety/lbkr in Bower spot. If anything young Niemann has to know how to play his brothers spot and could be better.

Now Jackson is a different story, a pretty much shutdown corner and that is hard to replace. He had all the picks but must have had 3 times as many passes physically touched and broken up let alone defensed many others. Ragumba and Hankins have shown the ability and if two guys can be the guys that will help as the Dline should be better even at pass pressure which was lacking this year.

I think it was fairly obvious. Kirk hates people that don't have dull personalities.

It's one thing to want a guy to follow your program, but KFz really seems to resent guys who aren't 100% his kind of player...that still succeed. Even as the single most important player on the offense this year...Kirk continued to refer back to the mistakes of his younger years.

Right on. I would argue it is beyond stubbornness but a character flaw. He treated CJ the same way early on. I will never forget the radio postgame following CJ's breakout performance against Purdue where again he saved KF's bacon.

The very first thing he said about CJ in response to Eddie's question was, "At least he played better than he practiced this week". And it wasn't intended as a joke. You could tell Eddie was taken aback.

Newsflash to you KF huggers! He is capable of being a uber-controlling insecure petty little man.

*Correction. I meant to say Pitt and not Purdue. Rudock went down with an "unspecified injury" and CJ rallied them from behind in the 2nd half.

But you are also correct because I think CJ started the next week at Purdue, he threw and early pick 6 but then played great in a pretty easy win.

And remember in 2013 I think when Rudock was a little dinged up ahead of the Nebby game and had to come out. CJ had that naked boot for a TD run which I do not think was the play call and Ferentz was noticeably upset and upset after the game. Sometimes the controlling aspect takes the joy out of the players and you can see it on the sideline and in games.

Has anyone ever heard about KF speeches pregame and at halftime, their substance and tenor?

what i am tired of is most off seasons we sit here and describe how next year will be 7-5 because of the SR's we lost and the backups have little game experience.

I love it too. Because we're pretty close to right on the money without even trying hard.

It's early, I don't think I'll panic just yet. But with major question marks in four different units receivers, linebackers, offensive line, and defensive backs the chances of coming up a bit short are increased. We shall see.

CJ was too confident for KF's liking.

I have no idea, but have you ever seen how demonstrative he is in the tunnel before the big entrance?

Yeah makes Tom Landry look like Carrot Top.

I think even without Wadley we will see offensive improvement. Daniels was good, but im not sure dominant and irreplaceable. O-line U, we should have someone to work with with a full off-season and o-line gurus on staff. I think we have a good chance at having a new guy step up to go with an improved (before next year) Smith-Marsette and a clutch Easley stepping up and being even better. With Fant and a very deep TE group, we will feature Fant and Co. a lot more in 2018. No 2nd yr slump for Stanley. 3000 yds and 25 tds.

That LB group. There is the key. Good athletes in the building. Good enough. Good athletes and good experience behind them, even better in front of them. Might need to take a few more chances with blitzing (I wish!), but, offense up a little, defense down a little with a chance to grow. We always have decent to great Lbs, so someone knows how to prepare good LBs.

Just throw this into the pile of excuses like small Iowa population recruiting base that all the KF defenders will use for our poor on field performance next season. Sweet!

If Stanley takes a leap and hits those deep passes we could have a pass offense like we’ve never seen, and any RB could slide in and produce.

Defense will be fine if the line gets pressure, some real talent on that line.

That’s my optimistic outlook.

Every year, every team's fan base has angst about how they are going to replace those irreplaceable players, and we Iowa fans are no different.

The LB turnover is going to be felt the most. In a sense, we may only be replacing two since there are strong rumors regarding the shift to having a hybrid safety/OLB position next season. It is quite possible that a combination of three of Hooker, Stone, Snyder and Gervase will be on field a lot. Colbert will be in the mix as well. It could end up being an interesting twist in our defensive scheme.

I'm not nearly as concerned about RB as some. I really like our young guys a lot. Young and IKM are solid, and, by all accounts, Bryan has amazing potential as well (though apparently he had shoulder surgery, so his status is in question). Also, Young already is better in pass-pro than Wadley ever was, so our passing game could actually benefit to some extent.

... and Wisconsin is losing 10 of their 11 starters on defense. It's college football.
Agree its college football and good players are lost every year, however not every team loses underclassmen How many Clones are leaving early? The very good teams lose players early but have the ability to replace with great recruiting. The mediocre teams like Iowa get hurt a bit more when they lose 2 quality players like Daniels and Jackson
Hope we have some young players ready to move up at a lot of positions and become difference makers but i'm not sure who they are at this point

Some years you'll have more attrition than others. Some schools have it way worse then we do. 4 isn't crazy. Those that think it is for us feel that way because we don't just have the 'next' kid in line ready to go. At center it's a crapshoot between 3 or 4 guys. LB somewhat similar. RB I'm not worried about at all quite frankly. I think the group we have should do no worse then what Daniels and Canzeri did as a pair. Coming into this year we were replacing CJ with a true soph QB that nobody knew what to expect from. And that's at the most important position so I think we'll be in better shape then what some of the doom and gloomers are anticipating.

Life-long Rams fan here (when they aren't hideous)...watched the Rams vs Atlanta last night until I got nauseous...reminded me of a Kirk team...choke, mistakes, ram it up the middle... Didn't finish it... Went to bed.

Good news...going to the Vegas/Rangers game tonight in Vegas!

What was the topic of this thread?

It is college football , you lose players 15-20 every year, its why you have 85 scholarships hoping you can get 22 who can play. Easy schedule, but likely 6-6 maybe 7-5 which is what we expect anyway out of this organization, not much else to look forward to.

How many deep passes did Stanley throw this year? I still have fingers after my count.
