Looking at most worrysome "holes" on 2011 squad

Here are some of the tops ones that give me the greatest concern:

"Most worried about"

FS: Replacing Greenwood
* No returning guys w/ starts
* Miller & Bernstine are likely front-runners
* Miller & Bernstine each have some experience

WILL LB: Replacing Hunter
* DiBona has some starts
* DiBona might be needed more at LEO depending on Nielsen's neck/back
* Kirksey appears to be an "up and comer"

DT: Replacing Klug
* Bigach has some reps now
* Bigach has shown some flashes
* No returning guys w/ starts
* Nardo could push for time

"Slightly worried about"

WR: Replacing DJK
* No returning guy w/ starts
* Keenan Davis is obvious front-runner
* Primary concern just relates to filling void in production

QB: Replacing Stanzi
* Vandenberg has some starts
* QB competition is at really high level
* Primary concern just relates to "touch" on the long ball and experience reading Ds and feeling pressure

DE: Replacing Clayborn
* Daniel has seen backup reps
* Daniel is a veteran and Alvis is a promising "up and comer"
* Primary concern just relates to filling void in production

TE: Replacing Reisner
* Herman effectively already is a starter
* Only concern is that Herman hasn't necessarily flashed the reliability with his hands that Reisner had

All in all though ... I think that the 2011 squad looks pretty decent on paper. Definely a group with the sort of potential to develop into a pretty darn dangerous team. The biggest issue may end up being the leadership on the team. However, on the flip side, the '08 squad was a rather young squad too ... and they were extremely close to being a dominating team by the end of the season.

Looking at next year it will be interesting to see who steps and assumes a leadership role. I think when you look from 2009 to 2010, there has been a slight drop off in this category. Angerer and Edds were tremendous leaders and we have missed them this year.

Safety would be a huge concern if Sash were to leave school early.

Agreed ... safety would be a HUGE concern is such an instance.

Why do you think he'd leave school early? Tired of the books?

Good list, but I think you missed an important one... Donahue.
Although he has not been as good this year as last year, having a solid punter is often underrated.

And the next option ( Mullings) is terrible. Slowest delivery ever. gonna get blocked like 85% of the time

If he can't handle Iowa fans then he's certainly not ready for the NFL. NFL fans can be down right nasty.

Due to the NFLPA and NFL labor negotiations (or lack thereof) there may not even be a full NFL season next year. This could be a really weird year where there may be no underclassmen leaving early in the entire country.

Even if there wasn't this uncertainty in the future, I doubt Sash would go, but given the state of the NFL, I really, really doubt he'll leave early.

Except for Cam Newton. I doubt he'll playing college ball next year, but he's been semi-pro for a while.

I think Greenwood is a solid player but hardly irreplaceable. Returning 3/4 assuming they all get better and that Bernstein will end up ok, this should be a better group

The LB's couldn't possibly be any worse. This should be a better group.

The DL is a unit that must play as a unit more than as individuals in our defensive scheme. So while we lose the best two players on the line,, we return two who should really help the line. This will be worse next year, but this is the one unit that is able to best absorb these kind of losses.

Overall the defense should be better next year, without question.

OL - Return 4 of 5, no reason to be worse, this should be a group that becomes dominant as the season wears on.

WR - Losing DJK stinks - hopefully Marv becomes as good as DJK and Keenan becomes as good as Marv. I think this group is worse next year, but still good enough to be a unit to worry about on the field.

TE - Every TE that has started for us has wound up in the NFL. Herman will continue that tradition, and CJFed is a very exciting player.

RB - We return everyone. Should be much much bette.

QB - There is no way that JVB will be better than Stanzi has been this year. The question will be if the improvements in the running game and the O-Line can neutralize the differences. I don't think he is going to stink by any means, I think it is unlikely he puts up stats like Stanzi has this year, with 21 TD and 5 INT's. I would hope for a 2-1 TD/Int ratio out of him.

Overall I think the O should be better in the running game and slightly worse in the passing game.

This is why the next two weeks really matter - winning out from here gives a team with a lot of talent coming back and is more of a reload than a rebuild a ton of momentum, and a likely top 15 preseason ranking.

Hopefully Fierdowcz is progressing to the point where Iowa can run a lot of two tight end sets. Especially if Cotton/Davis can't take the next step.

Fcas/hawkfarmer bring up good points about the punter and/or the punting situation.

Depth along the D-line is a concern.
Will need Davis/Cotton to step up and be productive.

Would like to see Wegher return if anything to return kicks and punts.

No, Tired of "fans" (Anthony Sicilio) sending direct messages to him on Facebook.

what message did he send to Sash? I'm no fan of facebook, and don't know a lot about the workings - but how is he sending Sash a message if he is not a friend of Sash? Does he have 'open enrollment'?

Warmups at the Wisconsin game.

And I'm sure Ferentz would send him out to punt, knowing his punts are going to be blocked 85% of the time. Even if that's an exaggerationg to make a point, he wouldn't send him out there if he doesn't get that ironed out.

I think losing Vandevelde will be an underrated loss as well. Maybe someone can help me out here, but idk a single other guy on the team who will be able to passably sing The National Anthem for the President next time he is in town!

Seriously though, he will be missed, but the biggest thing will be if Sash leaves early. We always seem to have good/decent safties, but Bernstine kept getting passed up by other guys @ CB, so I guess idk what to think of his prospects as a safety. I think there's too much $ to be lost by having NFL play shortened season or no season due to a lock-out. Lossing out on all the $ the NFL makes will make the owners and players come to some agreement.
