looking ahead

we lose; out of a 73.8 avg pg
Gatens 14 ppg
Cartwright 6.4 ppg

we have coming back;
Marble 11.1 ppg
White 10.2 ppg
Basabe 8.2 ppg
McCabe 8.1 ppg
Oglesby 6.2 ppg
May 5.8 ppg

the points will come from improved play by those players and a %'s by the new comers.
this team increased the team avg by 6 ppg
Marble incresaed his avg from 5.7 to 11.1 that is a 5.4 ppg increase. i feel that Marble will step in for Gatens next season, he only needs to improve his scoring by 2.9 ppg to do so.
he has already has shot more ft's this season, that is one of the biggest complaints i hear about Gatens is that he doesn't go to the line often enough. his 3PT shooting % was 25% last year and is up to 32% this year on 8-25 vs 11-42 last year
everyone was worried about who would get Coles #'s, i think White has done so in just about every catagory
for Gesell to equal Cartwright he needs to avg 6.4 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 4.3 apg, 0.8 stl pg.
if he is half as good as advertised he will do it
Woodbury will have Meyer and Olaseni to share the middle, i have yet to see him myself other than a few videos, i am definitely going to North Liberty as well as a couple friends of mine that coached AAU ball to get a look

I'm still unsure of what Fran's defensive identity is after a year and a half. Is it full court pressure? Is it half court pressure with trapping principles? Is it zone? Is it man?

With Mr. Davis, love him or hate him, you knew what to expect. We were going to full court pressure them and then fall back into a zone and pack the hell out of the lane and rebound like crazy and dare them to beat us with the 3.

With Alford, love him or hate him, we were going to play man-to-man and help out with the weakside defender and rarely switch on screens.

With Lickliter....well, I'd just rather forget about him altogether.

But with Fran, I haven't quite figured out what he wants to do defensively.

I don't think doing the same thing all the time is good. Some times a zone is best, sometiem man, sometimes pressure works sometimes it doesn't. you have to be flexible.

I agree somewhat with your point, but at the same time, successful teams have an identity, both on offense and on defense and then are flexible enough to be able to tweak them based on the opponent's strengths/weaknesses or what is working/not working within the game.

But you HAVE to have an identity!

I guess I'm trying to decide how concerned we should be about the lack of defense. Fran seems to know there is a problem, so it's not like he's ignoring it, but at the same time, there really doesn't seem to be any marked improvement with the D and we're most of the way through Fran's 2nd year. There are a few newcomers, but most of these players have been in the system for that entire time, and I find it hard to believe that it takes 2 years or more to learn how to play team defense.

So what I don't know is this: Is what Fran is teaching not getting through, or is it simply ineffective? Or is it just a personnel issue (i.e. lack of talent)?

I dont think you predictability do you?

to have a good defense you have to have a stopper in the middle, this team will have this next year, we will no longer see 6'7 centers nor will we have guards dropping off the perimiter to help guard the middle, Brommer and Archie are 6'9 but neither have the skill set to keep up the pace, Archie probably has the best athletic ability to but his other skills are just not there,
Archie gives everything he has but it is not enough, i wish him and Brommer had come in improved enough to be able to have RS Olaseni, but they weren't, this will be the last year that we go without a true center or without somebody over 6'10 or taller, and i think most of the sf will 6'7 to 6'8 and pf 6'9 to 6'10 the height alone will make for improved defense, and rebouding

blame it on cigarlighter, it takes ten years to clear out the smoke from bic lighter

I think good D come from play like Gatens.. being tenacious on the perimeter and not letting a team launch uncontested 3 balls. The games we've been hammered into the ground because of week D were teams that drilled us with threes. So I respectfully disagree with your notion that it improves next year with a big.
