Looking ahead - I don't get it

I have read all of the reviews and listened to all of the experts and I have not heard one person talk about Iowa running the table. Ok, I can understand that because it is so hard and rare to do that, but those same people are all talking like it is a foregone conclusion that Wisconsin will. First of all, I think we are better than Wisconsin, especially in November. We run the ball better, we stop the run better and we have a better quarterback. Sure we have some injuries, but so does everyone. And looking at our schedules going forward, we both pretty much play the same schedule except we play at Nebraska and Wisconsin plays at Illinois. Not only did Illinois beat Nebraska, but I do think they are a much better team, in fact, much more balanced than any team we face left on our schedule.

I still think the one way to beat us is to have a great quarterback, the one that can pick us apart in those gaps in the zone and that is content with the underneath stuff. I doubt anyone is going to run straight at us, so for the most part we can make everyone one-dimensional. So who left on our schedule has the capability to do that? I just don't see anyone being able to do that consistently without turning the ball over. Purdue, MD, Minnesota, and NW are very limited at QB and Neb and Indy arent much better but are severely limited on defense. There is a case study for each team on how to shut them down.

On the other side of the ball, I think we are definitely the most balanced of any team in the West, and maybe anyone in the Big Ten other than Ohio State. And I don't think we have really showed our whole hand yet. We still have yet to get the TE's involved, we have taken the air out of the ball for the most part in the second half of our games, and those are just a couple of examples.

My point is that if everyone is going to talk about Wisconsin winning out, I think they should talk about us because we have a better shot than they do. What do you all think?

I think if, and a big IF, we get past Northwestern this weekend the whispers may begin. We still have a game in Lincoln on the calendar as well and I think that still influences the talking heads.

We need to get some guys back.....boy are we banged up. Get past Northwestern, get healthy in the bye week, and then who knows?

I don't see a team in the West that is talented enough to run the table. Any West game that doesn't include Purdue will be competitive.

The thing is, is Iowa is not more talented than the teams they are playing against. Our team is solid and is playing good ball right now, but as I watch these games I feel that we are one or two plays from losing most of them.

Who knows, this team could come together like the 2009 team and be dominate at the end. The way I see it , is we are fragile right now, riding a win streak on a average schedule.

Totally agree with this. That said I find myself in a weird position because while thinking this way I look at the other side of things and think that in those games where we were one or two plays away from losing (wiscy game) we were also in a position where we were one or two plays from putting teams away and winning comfortably. I think of the wiscy game where we make one or two plays in the first half could have had us leading by multiple possessions going into the break.

Really hard to figure this team out.

The odds increase substantially if Iowa gets past Northwestern this weekend. Injuries are a big problem, but Iowa has the edge on every team they will meet after Northwestern.

Wisconsin still has Northwestern to deal with at home. Illinois and Minnesota on the road. They have a good chance to run out, but I wouldn't bet the house on them getting past all three of those teams. Northwestern, even if they get past Iowa, have Nebraska and Wisconsin on the road.

its simple math. Its very, very, very hard to run the table.

even if a team has a 80% chance of winning each game, the odds of going 6-0 in last 6 games is only 26%

but Iowa probably is not THAT good, so lets say the odds of winning each remaining game is really more like 60%. The odds of going 6-0 is then only 5%.

Its just not very likely to happen, for Iowa or for Wisc. you really have to be Ohio St level good to overcome those odds.

Six games left

Get past Northwestern, and Ferentz 3.0 begins.
Worried about the injury bug and losing Ott is huge. Past dominant Iowa teams could put pressure with the front 4, and we just don't have that, this year.

I'm watching CBS Inside College Football right now, and Arron Taylor said he really likes our chances to run the table in the regular season if we stay healthy. It's really awesome to see our Hawks getting some good publicity for once.

Winning out is tough, as we all know. Two games ago I thought best not to even think about it. Wisky seemed to have an easier schedule after the Cornshuckers. But after seeing Illinois stout defense and Minny finding some offense I'm thinking both teams will have at least one loss. No table running for either team is my prediction. Iowa just needs to end up at least tied to Wisky when its all over.

Like I said, why not us? We run the ball, we stop the run, we have a shut down corner, and have a great balance on offense. I understand injuries can derail us. But from my original post, I believe we should be considered to run the table before Wisconsin.
