I sincerely hope this ends the discussion of where the weakness lies within Iowa Hawkeye Football over the last decade and where the weakness lies yet again this year...

Numbers.... a decade worth of them... don't lie.

So we have an offense problem. Nothing new there. This is Ferentz's "style" of offense, but he does NOT call the plays. Nor is he responsible for time management issues... Now what?

DERP!

Nothing to see here folks. Move along.

Thought I'd add another interesting tid bit. In each of the last 3 years we've been ranked in the top 10% in scoring defense. The last 2 years we were also ranked in the top 10% in total defense... and this year's (15th of 120) total defense just barely missing the top 10%.

Really good post.

Now I'd love to see someone list beside each of the offensive years the starting O-Lines (names & general height/weights) and running game(yds/game). I'd bet money you'd find a general correlation to offensive rank vs. O-Line vs. ability to run the football vs. W-L. The only exception would be the year of no healthy RB's.

Wow - one more tidbit... this year, and the last 3 years, we're ranked in the top 10% in the nation in scoring defense.

4 STRAIGHT YEARS in the top 10% in the nation in scoring defense.

Tell that over and over again to the Norm Parker haters. It is a quick and easy way to shut their mouths.

Why can't Kirk see this & make an adjustment? Loyalty over a better offensive team?

Kirk and KOK taught school together and coached at Worcester Academy (Joe Philburn was their student) and Kirk will never fire his prep school mentor.

Well that's just pathetic.

His prep school mentor is ruining his college football team.

I'll readily admit that in years past, the BBDB has frustrated me greatly.

But in the end, this simply proves that more often than not the defense is covering up for what is often a HORRIBLE offense.

And there's really no excuse to have such a good defense yet such an awful offense in an era where racking up the yards and points just isn't that damn difficult.

From an offensive perspective.... I think in my head I can almost super-impose the three aspects that determine offensive success in KF's system;

# 1 Good O-Line
# 2 Establish running game at 135+ yds / game (healthy RB's)
# 3 Game mgr QB - move the sticks after a negative yardage play and delivery some big passes in the passing game

Walk through each of the seasons using these 3 and note the offensive rank. The only anomoly might be the season without RB's.

The real missed opportunity in my book was 2008. That team was loaded with a great O-Line and RB but we had issues with # 3 (deciding on QB). We lost a ton of close games that year. I think we also struggled with confidence for a period of time given the debacle the year before. The O-Line was Bulaga, VanDevelde, Bruggerman, Oleson, Calloway. Smallest guy was JV. Now that was a freaking decent line and one of the better one's since 2002. We also had an absolute stud in the backfield in Shonn Greene. On top of that the defense was killer also. The QB issues really stiffled us that year. Once we got that figured out and got a big win we went on a serious roll that carried into the next season.

I'll add to number 3.... a more mobile QB who can make plays with his feet. Our best offensive years, production wise, were under Tate and Banks.

The offense was more productive with Drew Tate at QB because he audibled out of the run off tackle for no gain to passing plays all the time.

Tate looks better and better in hindsight as we (you...I already knew it) discover how inept and incompetent our offensive coaching has been.

I would have to think that the most common phrase in the Iowa huddle coming from a savvy quarterback's mouth would be "OK. We're not running that..."

Well, it is obvious and always has been that def is better than offense for sure. That is why we have few skill players in NFL only lineman and defensive players.

Vandenberg is a more moblie QB. Is he that much better? We will see. But there are three things that we know he is better at than our current QB.
1. He has better feet.
2. He can find and throw to a secondary receiver. Our current QB cannot.
3. He can throw on the run better. From the little we saw last year vs. OSU that is true...

Are the feet good enough? Can he provide the deep ball pass? Does he have the leadership? If we can answer those questions with an average-to-above average answer, we will have a very interesting year next season...

On Iowa!

I don't know if any of this is true. From what we saw last year, he can throw a really nice slant pass. Has plenty of zip on the ball, and does appear fairly poised.

But, he didn't exactly tear it up against NW, OSU, and MN. In fact, the MN game was pretty bad. No touch on the ball, missed targets, though the staff did play very conservative gameplan for that game.

What we do know is other than Banks, who KOK worked in running plays for, Tate was also a spread/mobile QB yet was forced to stick under center in 2005/2006.

And Jake was a dual threat QB who again seemed to be forced under center which was the weakest part of his game with his lack of height.

I hope next year JVB or CW decides to run for more yards than STanzi did this year. Stanzi still had trouble throwing balls away, and took too many sacks.
