local employer blocks tourney web access

I was talking to group of sports fans at 3 Bag yesterday evening, and they were telling me that their employer blocked a lot of sports-related websites in order discourage the employees from checking on tourney results. How cruel!

My company has a t.v. in the break room, and not surprisingly, that t.v. was tuned in to CBS all afternoon. :D

I understand too why an employer would do that, because my productivity certainly dipped yesterday, but the NCAA first round only happens once per year.

I recall an article 2 or 3 years ago where a consultant estimated a cost of something like $4 billion in lost productivity due to the tournament, and I'm sure a lot of companies jumped on the bandwagon due to that. While I'm sure there is some dip in productivity, I remember his assumptions failed to consider that people waste time every day and that these people are likely checking on the tournament results when they would normally be doing something non-work related anyway. Also if I remember correctly, he estimated something like 60 million people watching while the ratings showed it was only around 15-20 million.

I have no problem watching cbssports.com at work and we can't look at sites like twitter, facebook, myspace, etc.

They have a "boss button" on the cbssports.com site where it brings up a "dummy" spreadsheet when you click on it. As soon as you close it, it takes you back to the games. How awesome is that!?

you just have to be creative and access the site through a proxy server or from a link in an email. most places don't think about blocking those kind of things.
