I will type notes as they say them at the presser....please do not reply.

Dr John Stokes Internal Medicine is there
Paul Federicci, Director of FB operations
Jeff Poggi, dad of Jim Poggi are all there...will be speaking

Paul: As most know, a number of student athletes are being treated in UIHC Our concern is first and foremost for safety and recovery. Our team physicians have been in contact with parents and guardians.

In terms of what has led to this, we are still working through it and do not have details. We hope to get to that point as we continue to investigate

Part of what is fundamental to our students is a collective effort with UIHC and team phuysicans and S&C staff and coaches..we all work together to ensure safety of students athletes.

Dr Stokes: Problem is RBDO (u know) it is a muscle injury syndrome. Causes are extensive, may be 100 different causes for this problem. When it occurs in young and healthy individuals, one of the common scenarios we look for is recent exercise, heavy exercise in heavy individuals can produce muscle injury syndrome.

In military, recruits in boot camp often times heavy physical exercise and this syndrome well described under those circumstances.

Many other things that can be involved. Genetic disorders can render muscle sensitive to injury an exercise. Some drugs can do it, drugs that lower cholesterol. In susseptible people. Many drugs can produce this kind of a problem.

The treatment for this problem is to put the affected person in hospital so they can receive IV fluids in general and their blood components can be monitored. One of the reasons I am here, I am a kidney specialist. With this disorder, one of common complications is kidney injury or failure. When someone is diagnosed with this problem, the therapy is directed at trying to prevent a future kidney injury in the next hour or days or limit whatever kidney injury exists so far. This monitoring is something going on right now.

Poggi: My son is a freshman on team. When I found out he was being admitted I flew out here. I wanted to be here in front of you. I volunteered to do this, because there is stuff swilring around...I want to give parents perspective what I am thinking about.

Q Is dialysis part of treatment?

A Stokes: If its severe, it can be a part of the treatment. Its unusual to have that severe of an injury. In young healthy individuals, the recovery is reasonably quick and seldom would dialysis be neccessary

How does lack of hydration play into it?

Stokes: That is often an important determinant of a muscle injury but extent to which it can affect the kidneys. Not surprisingly, injuries to muscles can be wide...can have mild, you would never know, or it can be extremely severe. The things that can predispose to more severe injury can be dehydration or a lot of heavy workout....or if someone had diareha or a previous illness that gave them to that, and they worked out could make them succespitlb.e

Q: can u relaspse?

A: Not unless they have genetic predisposition. This is generally a one time occurence and usuall people realize I dont want to do it again and you take precautions to limit exercise or adequate hydration

Q: What are liklihood that 12 people with different body types get it at same time?

A: Stokes: I don't know the probability of that happening, it does appear to be unusual. Common denominator was undergoing a heavy exercise program and heavy exercise is known to produce this syndrome. I suppose the first thign one would look at as a cause wold be to say what was common about that workout and or were they ill with some other problem, a virus, etc

Q: Inividuals worked too hard?

A: I think its way too soon to tell. I dont know any details about the workout

Q: What role can supplements play

A: Stokes: I assume you mean supplements at a health store? One thing about food supplements is you can pick them up, read the label and that may have nothing to d o what is inside the bottle. These agents are not regulated by FDA. Manufacturer can put whatever they want in it and they dont have to tell the truth. I hope most labels are correct but we see many examples where people have taken such things that have received damage to organs. It is possible that people taking food supplemnets can take something the label says safe but could contain something injurious

All quotes above this are from Dr Stokes...he has to leave in a few minutes...will be sure to let you know when Paul F comes back, as he is going to talk about the workouts...and Papa Poggi is going to talk too

Q have you seen injuries like this massive scale

A: I have been here 32 years, and I dont think I have seen 13 people get this..but it is a fairly common diagnosis in the practice of medicine. This cluster would be unusual

Q Treatment

A: It's straightforward...not just salt...monitor other electrolytes, not exactly straight forward. Usually does not involve dialysis, rarely would

Q 48 hour time frame typical treatment?

A: No surprise. Doctors are being sure muscle injury getting better and if kidney functio was affected, to make sure it is not getting worse and if it was damanged, it is getting better. A few days would be reasonable, sometimes a week

Q: after release, take a break from workout?

A: The recommendation for exercise induced (big word) is variable and will depend on individual and details. An episode of this would not preclude further strenuous activity. Might have to change intensity. For example, many football players have had this and it does not stop their careers

PAUL F

Are players aware of workout that is coming that day?

A: We are in winter program phase and they know its an important and ambitious part of the workout. They might not know the details but that they are going to work hard in the winter.

Q: Where is coach Ferentz

A: He is returning today and back later today

Protocol for players during workouts, breaks provided?

There are breaks during all workouts sessions and plentiful hydration beverages available before, after, during, water everywhere, all at their discretion its limitless

Supplemnts, what U gives and what players can take?

Its an interesting industry. There are always new ones. We havea policy for anything to be given to athletes must meet NCAA compliance...these are strict rules. It must clear compliance

Q Do u know if they were taking common supplemntn?

A: Dont know that

Q: Were these 12 doing anything different?
A: All athletes completed same workouts the last few days, in variety of groups, due to classes, all participlated and completed workouts

Q: Similar to past workouts?
A: Yes

Q: What entail?
A: I dont have details of that. I know all athletes that were medically cleared to do workouts all had to complete the workouts

Q: Describe how many athletes in group and moderators?

A: It varies. We have a large roster...each workout group each day...they are similar, but groups are decided into two or three sub groups so proper supervision can be worked. It depends on class schedule....some work early then go to class. Its safe to say each group varies in range from 15 atheltes to 35 on high end.

Q: Were all strength coaches there?
A: All 5 were there for all sessions

Q: Workouts stopped?
A: DOnt know detail, but yesterday was a recovery day and a lighter day. Today is a heavier workload day, tomorrow an active recovery day

Q: 100 squats, typical to jump in that heavy?
A: I dont know if that was done but that has been a part of our programming in the past?

Q: Unique to Iowa?
A: Cant answer that

Q: Why these 13 and not others in hospital?
A: We are looking into anything that will help us understand. With 13 people there is questioning and investigation that has to occur
