I completely agree with the article. We executed...but I've never seen so many defenders completely out of position in one game. That was terrible. Look at Fant's first touchdown...he's ten yards clear of anyone. Blown coverage...and there were several others. These guys thought they could just show up Saturday....and they got their asses handed to them. That's what it tells me.
PSU did the same. We just didnt react to it.

I have been impressed with Stanley from day one. He doesn't rattle, makes his progressions, and lets it fly. Even when he was missing the long ball he was not turning it over. Having success against Ohio State with throwing on first down, hopefully, has convinced Kirk that you can be balanced offensively working pass to run. Reading the OSU game boards was truly entertaining. It started with complaining that Iowa wouldn't help them in the polls and "couldn't wait to see the backups" to "dang, this is gonna be a physical game", to "how is this happening!"
One poster complained that the officials weren't "taking care of the contenders". Talk about primadonnas. The overconfidence to the meltdowns, great reading!

Yep, he also said, repeatedly, Iowa did nothing new or unusual in their plays.
For the most part that is accurate. What is unusual is that the game plan followed the action on the field. When something didn't work, they stopped trying it. When something worked, they "scratched where it itched" so to speak. When something almost worked, but wasn't executed, they went back to it later (and executed it pretty much to perfection").

He’s blaming this on poor preparation of basic pro-style scheme. And MSU. And Michigan. And if they make it through those two who run a pro-style, then the best pro-style waits in the CG.
Urban pretty much dropped the ball didn't he? I believe he pretty much said they didn't look at any film until Wed. He truly thought the Bucks would just show up and out play the Hawks. Meanwhile KF couldn't find enough film on the Buckeye defense so they scrounged up some Buccaneer footage to get an idea how Schiano approached pro style offenses. Pretty much sums up the lack of preparation doesn't it?

As Jon Miller stated on his poscast, IMO, OSU showed up with an arrogant defensive game plan...figuring they could stymie us with a basic package. It didn't work, they didn't adjust and the results were apparent.

The offensive game plan was very similar to what they used vs. Minnesota. The result was pretty different for a number of reasons:
  • they had some great plays, passing and running, on 1st down that were brought back by penalty vs. MN
  • they took a deep shot on 1st down from their own 10, caught MN off guard, executed everything perfectly...and then the ball bounced off the receiver's facemask for an interception
  • they had 3 or 4 drives that would have been extended if not for drops
  • they fumbled inside the opponent's 20
  • MN committed more resources to stopping the run, OSU played straight up
  • With how MN's offense was performing, Iowa did not feel compelled to keep the foot on the gas pedal and instead played it safe
  • OSU made a ton of mental mistakes. If you did not read the article posted by the OP, take a look; OSU just brain farted a ton out there, and not on anything overly tricky

It was a lot about execution. Iowa broke some tendencies, but breaking tendencies without execution doesn't work. Iowa's defense played it's usual tough game. Iowa's offense executed. Almost to a man they didn't drop balls, Stanley was on target or close.

The offensive line stepped up big time. Can't say enough about the freshmen tackles. And we have these 300 pound monsters for 3 more years!!! The future is bright if they can all stay healthy.
Executing on pass plays can open up the run game. Executing on run plays can open up the passing game. Executing on both fronts opens up the playbook.

If Stanley was not connecting on his first down passes, do you think that BF could or should have continued to call them frequently? Does 2nd and 10 all night sound ljke a good idea? Iowa tried coming out and throwing more on first down against MN, they were not executing well and it had to be shelved.

Execution is key. The most dominant Iowa teams could have told the defense what was coming but it wouldn't matter because they could still execute it.

The two biggest improvements we saw against OSU were:
1. WRs and TEs were catching the ball much better.
2. The freshman tackles played like they belonged on the same field as OSU.

I thought the turning point of the game was the penalty on Bosa. It was tied at 17 we had the ball at about midfield on a 3rd and long. If he didn't headbut Stanley we are punting it back to them. (maybe?? Probably) but instead we get 15 yards and next play Stanley drops the ball in the bucket to Fant and that gut punch started the 31-0 run. For whatever reasons Urban totally bailed on the running game. Dobbins should look to transfer after that game for the lack of using of him. I guess Meyer thought Barrett could do what he did against PSU and just play like superman but for crying out loud no QB can pull off what he did there twice in a row. Especially on the road against a team that their D couldn't slow down.

I would assume that Kirk had a great deal to do with the game plan. You and others are always quick to blame Kirk when our offense seems disabled. Now I would expect you would heap praise on his efforts, right?

This O is talented. Kirk gets credit for that. Its silly to go bonkers because he figured out how to effectively use that talent.

This is a very talented team. If he goes back to run 2/3 of the time for 3.5 yards....

If the changes continue I would feel like my daughter who I adopted as an older child. I expected sort of thank you. Her reaction was...why the hell did it take you so long to come and get me? We laugh about it now.

Kirk...why the hell did it take you so long?

Eventually Ill laugh about it.

I would bet one or both of those tackles might be gone prior to senior year. One of them will be an Outland winner.

NO ONE passes to a fullback...oh, crap...!!!!! Touchdown Iowa!!!!!

WTF who is the long snapper snapping to?...oh, crap...!!!! Touchdown Iowa!!!!

WTH...the tight end on a fly pattern to the corner of the endzone?...oh, crap!!!! Touchdown Iowa!!!!

Yes, the patterns were changed...along with execution...

Just like the pass to the fullback in the Iowa State game that was huge. It is almost like no one ever does that and is awesome when we do. No one ever expects the full back out for an actual pass. Like the kid in grade school you felt you never needed to cover because no one ever threw to them because they were probably gonna drop the ball.

It helps when your fullback was a former all-conference and all-state WR. To be fair, most of his all-conference and all-state honors were probably due to his work at LB, but he was a WR in a pass-happy Muscatine offense (47 rec for 600 yds and 6 TDs as a senior, to go along with another 7 rushing TDs).
