Hawkeyes up 10 in the first half to Long Beach State, end up losing.

They did so many things well in the first half and then they turned around and did so many things wrong in the second half.

They were absolutely dominated on the boards. Couldn't get out to guard the 3 ball. Shot awful from beyond the arc.

Gatens isn't 100%, he doesn't look 50% with that hand. I wish Fran would sit him until he is healed. Iowa needs a 100% Gatens later in the season, but Iowa also need healthy people on the court now.

Archie needs more PT.

Not trying to be a smartass here, but why does Iowa need Gatens later in the season? It isn't like they will need him for a postseason run or anything. With or without him Iowa is going to get smoked in Big Ten play a lot this winter. Since he has played now and can't redshirt might as well play him.

Archie and Brommer both played very well today. Thier combined line was...

18 min, 4-5 fg, 7 reb, 3ast, 3blk, 1stl, 1to, 8pts.

I bet you didn't think you would say this before the season started?? But it sounds like the Hawks are getting killed on the boards in all of their games. It would be nice if Archie would get on the floor more and at least grab some boards.
I think you are right about Gatens, he could sit out the game this Friday and then see how he is feeling next week for Wake Forest. That would give him roughly a 8 day break or so.

That's a good point, scott. But if Iowa wants to compete in the Big Ten at all this year, they can't have an injured Gatens. You can see him grabbing his off-hand regularly and his shot is awful right now. Why let an injury linger all season when you can sit for a few weeks and let it heal all the way?

Looked up the box score. LBS had 15 more shots and actually had a worse fg percentage, but made three more FG's. Gatens and McCabe had a bad FG percentages. You got to get the ball in the basket in order to press well. Cartwright had good offensive numbers. Since I couldn't watch I do not know the turnover story.

No, I can honestly say that I didn't think I would be saying that.

LBS had something like 20 offensive boards. That's sick.

True and I see your point here, with him they could be somewhat competitive but without him it will be even uglier.

I wouldn't play him Friday night as they "shouldn't" need him, then have him ready for Wake as that as a game I still think Iowa can win, then rest him for Idaho State and have him ready for UNI, ISU and Drake so that would be play him once in the next two weeks.

Up by 10, lose late. Damm....BB team has been watching...er...nevermind.

More importantly, I wonder who Lute was rooting for?

Actually, they were up by 12 in the first half 27-15.

From the box score: Gatens (2-9) 4-pts, MCCabe (2-8) 4-pts, Cole 6-pts, Basabe 5-pts, Payne 0-pts. Iowa will not win many games if these 5 players score only 19-pts. .

Too many players that were recruited to play Lick's style. There will be some transfers and new faces next season. Love the new style and the fact that Mac will not play favorites, he has 11 different players and will play the ones playing well.

Gatens needs to play thru this not rest, he missed 3 weeks and is rusty, by xmas he will back to full strength and be our most consistent player

We cannot afford more transfers. You have to think the players that seem lost now, will feel a little better by the end of the year.

Fran hasn't proven he can recruit yet, so if we do get transfers, and he continues to struggle to get players here, Iowa will always be at the bottom of the league.

At what point does the lack of recruits become a knock on the program and no the coach? Fran may be a great coach but I still have no idea how he's going to sell players who can actually compete in the Big Ten to play here and it's not really his fault.

Let's have that discussion after Fran gets a couple years of recruits in first and is also able to get his system in place with the existing players.

As I watch these tournys across the country and beyond, I am struck more than ever how there is talent everywhere and on teams from everywhere. Last nite,Chaminade gave MSU all they wanted. Chaminade had at least 3 players who could probably start for Iowa. This encourages me,because I am pretty confident that when Fran gets that better talent, he knows how to coach'em up. And I think with our conference, our facilities, and this staff, they will get those guys, eventually.
The BTN, and the current status of the Big Ten as the pre-eminent conference in the land will as they say ''high tide raises all boats''...for Iowa bb. And when recruits see Iowa playing uptempo ball, maybe with unsuited players for that tempo, they should see opportunity for early playing time. I think that will all result in a raising of the talent level pretty quickly. When Fran gets a few more of the right guys, we will be in the hunt for the 7th-4th level of the league pretty quickly, which gets us dancing, maybe.

Once the new practice facility gets completed recruiting will get much, much easier. What recruit would want to come here with no practice facility?
