Levar Woods Press conference

He runs them through drills and obviously is in charge of their positional meetings it isn't like he is tasked with finding the cure for cancer.

Some people will ***** about anything. It's also good experience for his career to get a little time on the offensive side of the ball.

meh.
I can rest easy,

meh

I couldn't help but laugh at some of the comments that Woods made during the press conference. He is very candid about the fact that he knows very little about tight ends and that he is learning on the job and he was surprised at the fact that he was given the position. He even references the fact that he will often screw up on something and the players will have to tell him that he's wrong and show him the correct way to do it. This is a major problem in my opinion. He is a Division 1 power 5 tight ends coach who knows nothing about tight ends!!! I feel like Ferentz could have brought in someone who actually has experience rather than shuffle the deck a little. If you haven't read the press conference please do. Does anyone else have a similar observation?

Think of BF at New England...

It is after all a developmental program. Might as well develop the coaches too. After a few years he'll probably be a pretty good TE coach.

Notice who the starting QB will be? When CJ played, the TE seemed to be the last option of consideration for a pass play. I'd say the same goes for GD's philosophy as CJ's philosophy: let's get down the field. I imagine the TE will be used a lot in run blocking, and I also imagine KF is sulking, somewhere.

The problem with Ferentz is rather than firing underperforming coaches and bringing in someone better, he "reassigns" them and keeps them at their same pay grade or higher. Last year we had two guys coaching the worst linebacking corp in the conference. Rather than make the coaches accountable, he simply reassigns one of them to fill an open spot. Our OL had two NFL tackles yet still couldn't develop any kind of running game or give Jake any time to throw. Give that OL coach a raise and a shiny new title. Who knows, maybe the two coaches were saved by their superior recruiting prowess?

Coach just needs a few more years to get his system implemented.

Were fine fellaz, i think nate kaedong should be our RBs coach, i mean he played soccer alot

Let's keep Nate out of this. You realize he is the ONLY player in Iowa High School history to start for three state championship teams in a single academic year, right? He started for IC West on their state championship football, basketball and soccer teams his senior year.

Oh, and if he wanted to he probably could coach any position in football. And LeVar will be fine. He's still learning how to coach the tight ends but he can do it. He's still got over three months before fall practice starts. Other coaches have done it for other teams, so there's no reason LeVar can't.

Typical compound dweller post. He's got three months to catch up? So in those three months he'll catch up to people who have been coaching the position for years?

Other coaches have done it for other teams? Would love to see your list of Power 5 schools who had a coach at a position that had never played or coached it a day in their life or maybe you assume all other school's operate under the lunacy of Kirk Ferentz coached teams?

Awesome!

Happens at my work all the time, people get moved to different departments and know nothing about it, or even worse, people are promoted to manage staff and know nothing about what the staff really does. Hospitals are notorious to have an individual manage multiple units or departments to save money, for which half they have no idea or experience in.

Actually, at my work, we use Kaizen to improve all areas of our business. We call it Rapid, Continuous Improvement (RCI) instead of Kaizen. We get teams of people from all departments of the company to get together and look at a particular process and try to improve it; we take a week to do each improvement. I didn't know anything about the areas I've done RCI's and neither did most of the people they put on these teams, but they like that. Someone can come in with a fresh perspective and give good input to improve a process. The result is almost always an improvement in process which saves the company a LOT in time, money, etc. By the way, I work for a multi-billion dollar corporation.

Giving a fresh perspective for a day or two is a little different than having those people step in and completely take over the job full time. If that happened at my job all hell would break loose. It's nice to have people who don't need to be observed while they're doing their job. Being able to trust they know what they're doing so you can focus on your duties accomplishes the most in a shorter time. Have to train someone every now and then and it temporarily slows everyone down.

Coaching tight ends, on the difficulty scale, does not rank close to a top score. For goodness sake, Lavar has been around football for how many years? You don't think he can be a very good tight ends coach? Really? Really?

Levar will be fine. If you are a football coach then you will have a coaching mind. he will learn the position. I had heard that from the time he heard he was switching roles until the start of spring practice he was out recruiting the majority of the time. He didnt have a ton of time to study.

I've watched a lot of TV. What time do you want me to come over a repair yours? See how stupid you sound?

I don't know. For my job I had to go to college for 8 years and post-collegiate professional training for another 3 years before I could start the job for a total for 11 years training. I know every job is different but I'm an Iowa fan and if we really want Iowa to be closer to the level of some of the great programs in college football I feel like we need competant people coaching at every position. I loved watching Levar Woods as a player and he was a very hard worker on the field. He also seems like a hard worker as a coach and I had no problem with him being the linebackers coach but I have a problem with guys coaching our Hawkeyes who have never coached that particular position in their lives. I mean go to like a DII school or small DI school to do the learning than once you get it down start coaching at a Power 5 school.

So in the meantime, send Levar to "the minors" so he can cut his teeth coaching DII tightends. Then when he's ready, call him up to the bigs to coach tight ends? All the while, scour the country for the best tight end coach available to fill the gap.
See how crazy that sounds?

Why would they shop for a tight ends coach?

This is a non-issue. The dude knows football. He's been around it his entire life. He's a smart and savvy guy, and I would guess he's doing his homework.

No. The problem is they should have shopped for a tight ends coach at the end of last season if they felt like they needed a new one and kept Woods coaching the position that he played himself and excelled at in college. These are just things that I don't think schools like Alabama or Ohio State would do.
