Levar Woods Press conference

I couldn't help but laugh at some of the comments that Woods made during the press conference. He is very candid about the fact that he knows very little about tight ends and that he is learning on the job and he was surprised at the fact that he was given the position. He even references the fact that he will often screw up on something and the players will have to tell him that he's wrong and show him the correct way to do it. This is a major problem in my opinion. He is a Division 1 power 5 tight ends coach who knows nothing about tight ends!!! I feel like Ferentz could have brought in someone who actually has experience rather than shuffle the deck a little. If you haven't read the press conference please do. Does anyone else have a similar observation?

Queue LapDog Scooter, HawkNick and HawkIState - if they are in fact not the same person - to brush this off as irrelevant in 5...4....3

Pretty much the same thought. Talking about his lack of experience (and really, what else could he say? At least he was open and not so much coach speak) as TE coach seems a bit concerning.

Part of me thinks this is nothing more than getting some of KF's staff some additional experience before he is let go. Otherwise, how does this make sense? BF gets his additional title, yet not real changes or additional responsibilities.....

Guess see how it plays out. The TE have been disappointing for many years. Not because lack of talent, but lack of any imagination to use them....other than the tOSU game in 2013.

Yea thats quite the head scratcher to me... Here's what I would have done. I would have had Brian Ferentz who has had NFL expereince with TEs pull double duty of Oline coach and TEs. Instead of adding an insignificant title of "run game coordinator" give him a real one... Not sure if there's much precedence for that but since Parker had been DB coordinator and the overall one for years now I'd think it should be geez. Keep Woods at LBs with Reid. I don't think Reid will be there for long and hopefully Woods is he's a great up and coming LB coach maybe D coordinator down the road...

Brian Ferentz learned on the job as TE coach with NE. Seemed to work out ok there.

LOL. Ferentz spent his first two years with the Pats as a "coaching assistant" and didn't take over the tight ends until his third year. Hardly the same thing as being in charge from the start and your player's having to tell you what to do.

Whenever you think Kirk has plateaued with his lunacy he shows us all there's still plenty to spare.

Yeah, you really have to get 'worked up' when posters on an internet board question
a former NFL player and well respected former Hawkeye's ability to handle getting guys to
run square outs. Color me under-whelmed by this LAME thread.

GO HAWKS

Anyone old enough to know the history, personality and character of LeVar Woods isn't the least bit surprised or worried by these comments. This is LeVar showing humility and gratitude. Keep watching... he'll do just fine.

I could have been TE coach with the Pats with Gronk and the soon to be felon Hernandez playing there.

And Tom Brady is an offensive coordinator on the field.

Coach Woods is a great young coach. He has the ability to coach any position on the field and to a good job at it. Even as a player he was a great leader on the field. I remember him smashing more than his share of tight ends.

I would think you'd want someone coaching who has experience with that particular unit, but what do I know?

This is the thing though... there's a crapload of coaching experience on the Iowa staff. Starting with KF. There are some older players at the TE position. Greg Davis has clearly been around the game a long time. BF coached TE's in NE. If you like Lavar Woods as a coach then now is the time to make the change because he's a smart guy and when you have the kind of resources he has around him it really shouldn't be a big deal. People will make a mountain out of a molehill because they like to lay blame wherever they can. Reality is Lavar will be fine. There will be a transition period but he has the resources in place to make that transition.

As someone has already said, the TE position needs to be utilized more in Greg Davis' offense. They have to figure that out. That's the biggest key to this puzzle and that has been a problem the past couple of years so you can't blame it on Lavar if it is a problem again this year. To me that is a Greg Davis problem. All Lavar can do is learn the fundamentals, technique, and make sure they are doing what they are supposed to be doing. It's up to Davis to get them opportunities and it definitely seems like he's failed at that. At least it sounds like they have acknowledged it and are working on it even though Lavar didn't give specifics.

Coach just needs a few more years to get his system implemented.

Were fine fellaz, i think nate kaedong should be our RBs coach, i mean he played soccer alot

He runs them through drills and obviously is in charge of their positional meetings it isn't like he is tasked with finding the cure for cancer.

Some people will ***** about anything. It's also good experience for his career to get a little time on the offensive side of the ball.

meh.

Awesome!

Happens at my work all the time, people get moved to different departments and know nothing about it, or even worse, people are promoted to manage staff and know nothing about what the staff really does. Hospitals are notorious to have an individual manage multiple units or departments to save money, for which half they have no idea or experience in.
