Let's talk some DEFENSE!

Man was that some fun watching that team play some good old fashioned HAWKEYE defense or what? As we all know defense wins football games. They are only going to get better too!
Yes, the offense sputtered a little early but improved as the game went on. Nothing happened on the offensive side of the ball that can't be fixed.
I'm feeling pretty damn good about the Iowa Hawkeyes right now.

I was at the game yesterday. Yes the defense looks good, but outside of the Cowboys damn good QB, they don't have much of an offense. Their receivers dropped many passes that should have been caught. We will see how good our defense is at Ames Saturday on the road.

It was fun to watch. I also believe we were conservative up front on D due to the qb ability. The back 7 were very solid, good tackling. Physical, disciplined. Promising.

I watched a few B1G offenses yesterday that are quite potent, so great defense will be huge.

I haven't watched isu since last year, are they really that improved on offense? I agree with you that we will face much better, more balanced offenses, based on the other B1G games I watched, but I don't think isu should be our barometer.

As has been noted, Iowa's offense needs to click a little more starting next week. We aren't built for track meets.

Go Hawks.

Good first test but WY is pretty bad. ISU's line is pretty bad too so I don't expect much of a test until conference play.

Can you imagine AJ once he learns a move?

Barring injuries I am not worried about the defense. It's Iowa's passing game that has me concerned. Pass protection is still problematic. There were times when Stanley and the receivers weren't on the same page. It can be fixed, but by next week?

Depending on what Iowa gets from that passing game is the difference between Iowa winning by 2 touchdowns or ISU winning by a field goal late.

Their best offense last night was UNI's QB

This defense is better than last years.
The way the secondary played makes that statement true.
Our front 7 is awesome. And the D line is going to be dominant. Give it a couple weeks when the roles are sorted out.

I love this defense.

We'll see how awesome it is when PSU comes to town. That Wyoming offense was brutal outside of the qb. Their line was awful, and I think we actually have better receivers than they did. This is the bad thing about playing a cupcake non con schedule. I think the defense is good, but we'll see what happens when we hit conference play. I'm sure hoping the defense is good because I don't see our offense doing much this year. Stanley is going to take some lumps when he sees a decent defense because we always have trouble pass blocking, and I don't see much for receivers that are going to be a threat for us. Especially against some better defenses.

What did you see out of Iowa State Last night when you watched them? I saw a poor running game and small offensive line. I also saw a UNI QB toss the football to the opponent twice for 14 total points. Wyoming would beat Iowa State. Guranteed.

Dude, you are incredibly negative. Wyoming's line was not bad, but our front seven is damn good. It was much more our front 7 being dominant, than their offensive line being bad. ISU doesn't have a better line either. ISU has better skill position players (outside of QB), but on a positive note Park almost never runs and we tend to play much better against QB's who stay in the pocket. Our offense should improve as Stanley gets more comfortable. Our offense was fine in quarters 2, 3, and 4. Had we not had silly turnovers we would have put up 40. Stanley showed nice touch on the deep ball touchdowns to Fant and Easley. I hope we actually pass more as that is what will help him get more comfortable. Only throwing 15 passes was surprising.

Anything less than 20 passes is too few. Get Stanley some screens and RB checkdowns early to settle him....then let him chuck a couple. More reps will help...

I was hoping to see a couple frosh Wr targeted yesterday.

I was pretty unimpressed with the running game too, against a bad defense. It will only get harder if they can't get the passing game going.

I didn't get to watch the game, my cable provider doesn't carry a garbage station like cytv.

"Dominant". Sorry, but this bugs the hell out me every time I see it.

Sorry. Two thoughts going on. I could have removed the "be".
I had a cross between "This D line is going to dominate" or "This D line is going to be dominant".

I went Dominant.

I think most of us thought before the game that Iowa had some weaknesses, particularly in the secondary. But the defense showed up and played lights out football. They shut down a good QB. Much of the credit has to go to the front seven.

Being in the NW I didn't get to see much of the Iowa State-UNI game. From the highlights it looked like a weak UNI team that was having trouble getting out of it's own way. It does look like the Cyclones have a good QB and a couple of good receivers. So there is a real defensive challenge for the Hawkeyes ahead this Saturday. But if the Clowns think they are going to dominate Iowa's defense they are sadly mistaken.
I would expect Iowa's defensive line to give their offensive line more push than they can handle. Josey Jewell and the other linebackers were everywhere Saturday and I expect they will be again this Saturday. If Iowa does that the secondary will be fine.
