Let the portal madness begin

Guess we'll see he's got 2 yrs to play at BYU and they'll throw the ball. Are you saying you wouldn't take him over say KJ Parker, Terrence Smith or Buie? Cause I sure would. He'd be our #2 WR day 1. We have RVZ and Howard returning that have done much of anything and those other guys who haven't done squat so if Kyler woulda wanted to be a Hawkeye we'd have been pretty dumb to have not wanted him and see what he could do. I never heard if Iowa even kicked the tires or not my guess is we couldn't afford him so it just didn't go anywhere hence why BYU got him
Kasper has a grand total of 6 catches in 4 years. And you'd take him over a RS Freshman who didn't play a down (Smith) and another guy in Buie who was injured all year? Smith was a four star who a lot of the coaches think has a bright future and the same could be said for Buie. Buie was ahead of Howard on the depth chart this year until he couldn't go.

Maybe you'd take him over Parker who did see the field in limited action but I'm not even sure of that.

Kaspers been hurt too and buried behind other 4 and 5 star WRs on Oregons roster. Yes I'd roll the dice and take Kasper and his potential over the potential of our other guys. He's 6'6 215 lbs and can jump out of the gym. Kasper coulda went about anywhere he wanted coming out of HS hence going to Oregon. None of our guys had an offer sheet like he did. If all the players involved are 100% healthy I'm taking Kasper over the rest

Hawks recruited him. From what I've read he's a super primadonna. I'll take RVZ over him any day of the week. Vander Zee is going to be a name we'll remember years from now, book it.

Nwankpa had a pretty good offer sheet and he wasn't exactly a gem. Lutmer had 2 other offers, both local FCS schools. USD and SDSU.

Recruiting services are BS.

Nwankpa's offers...

Iowa
TCU
Georgia
UCF
Alabama
Oregon
Texas A&M
Florida State
Clemson
Louisville
LSU
Princeton
Kentucky
Penn State
Ohio State
Texas
Wisconsin
Florida
Oklahoma
Florida Atlantic
Michigan State
Notre Dame
Iowa State
Nebraska

Lutmer's offers...

Iowa
University of South Dakota
South Dakota State

One of these guys is going to play in the NFL and one is not...

Hmm.

Iowa is using the portal to "pull guys up" from G5 or FCS. Several have 2+ years of eligibility. They're staying true to their development mentality. I don't think they'll win the B1G doing that but who knows.

I'd love to be a fly in the wall in the coach's meetings as they discuss the various position groups, how they see what they have and how they talk about filling their needs. I was surprised that they're entertaining a RB...the new guy will have to have that break away threat

I expect the QB position to continue to improve. I hope and think they're looking to get a home run hitter at the RB position. WR has an ok base but we all know they need more.

I believe Louisville has some money to throw around I don't think they are bottom of the barrel in NIL. Wonder if there is a chance he comes back or if all bridges are burnt? In my opinion he is replaceable and overpaying for him would be a mistake in the long run

The odds for any player withdrawing from the transfer portal and coming back haven't been good. The ON3 transfer portal database keeps stats on past withdrawal numbers.

Past trends on transfer portal withdrawals:
2025 3.6% 1/28
2024 3.1% 1/32
2023 1.7% 1/60
2022 2.6% 1/39
(The third number is a fractional percentage.)

So basically, the chances of any given player coming back are about one in thirty.

IDC if a WR is a primadonna or not. Many of the good ones are. DJK was too and he's arguably as good of a WR as we've ever had and KF made it work. And there's no way Kasper is worse of one then DJK. You can't teach 6'6 210 and what all Kasper has to work with. RVZ might be the exception to what I said on our roster he looks to be really good if we'd just use him more. The rest though I'd trade in a NY minute.

I'm well aware of XN being a bust pretty much. That's mostly cause he's just slow and not quick enough. Yes recruiting rankings aren't the end all be all that's obvious. Kaspers just been hurt and then recruited over on the roster cause at Oregon that are WR factories they can cycle through em fast. At Iowa he'd get more of a shot. I was surprised Kasper didn't leave before this last yr frankly. Don't be surprised if he has a great yr at BYU and we'll still be wishing we had another decent WR

I think some people are over valuing what an Iowa offer to a WR is compared to Oregon and others. Smiths best offer besides Iowa woulda been between ISU and MN. Mostly he had MAC offers and his home state schools in IL and NW didn't offer. I'm not saying he won't be a decent player but the odds aren't crazy high that he'll be a difference maker either. But since he's a Hawk I hope he proves me wrong

Look at it this way if Smith and Buie got in the portal would they get a bag from BYU or many other power 4 conference schools? I highly doubt it. Obviously Kasper just did.

Nobody outside of Kasper and BYU has any real idea of the amount of money he got to go there. He might have gone there as much for opportunity as anything at this point.

For me, the statute of limitations is pretty well up after four years. Time to move on. If he's been injured for all this time why would we think he is suddenly going to be healthy for an entire season?

Is Iowa in the position to be that picky about who they bring in at the WR position? We just had a WR portal kid we were after from Kent state tell us no to go to Cincinnati instead... At this point if a WR would be willing to say yes we can't tell em no. Especially an Iowa legacy kid like Kasper. RVZ missed much of last yr with injuries we aren't about to kick him to the curb. Injuries are a part of football that's a risk you gotta be willing to stomach
