Let the portal madness begin

I listening to a podcast the other day and at that time there was over 3000 kids in the portal and I am sure there is more now. They were discussing whether they have ever seen any metrics on how many kids don't find a home or drop a level just to get some playing time like Jazz Patterson in a crowded room.

I am sure guys like B Allen will go somewhere but it sure sounds like a lot of guys are getting some really bad advice leaving an established (In most cases a full Scholarship position). I still think the one portal opening should be after spring ball. Let the new coaches come in and let the kids actually have a chance to work with them and see how they look on the depth chart before bolting.

Brian Allen is in. Didn't see that one coming at all. But then again, nothing should be a surprise these days.
I saw this this morning and was mildly shocked. Had lots of snaps this year and was going to get starter reps next year. Maybe it's a money thing, maybe something else. At best this hurts our depth on the D Line, at worst we lost a player with All-B1G potential.

Maybe this signals that Epenesa has passed him and will be an absolute stud next year. We did have a lot of guys play DL in the bowl game so hopefully those guys develop in the off season. We're going to need them all.

I'd say both Patterson and Allen want to play. I don't blame them.

Jaz has one year left and likely wasn't looking forward to being stuck down the depth chart.

Allen seemed to play a lot, but he only had half a sack this year. I'd guess he saw the writing on the wall in bowl prep and decided to go somewhere he'll be needed and start for sure.

The past 2 years it seems like Jaz has been passed on the depth chart. I'm kind of surprised he's stuck around this long.

This is a head-scratcher. He's only got one year left, knows the system and is in line for serious PT next fall. Was he promised a starting slot and some big $? We'll find out.

His numbers were down a bit this year. Were there any injuries? Was it lack of playing time or on the field performance?

Perich would be a great addition, and would fit in immediately. It will all depend upon how much he is prioritizing the money.

Allen is a bit of a surprise, but he just didn't make that expected leap this season. It makes one wonder if he has essentially hit his ceiling. We have more potential at DE behind him than we do at DT.

My portal wishlist (I went for incredibly optimistic but within the realm of possibility):

Harkless was the first guy I posted on a prior thread. From what I've heard, he's also a good "team" guy, and Purdue hates to lose him.

I'd love to see a big run-stuffer that also has good movement skills brought in. To me, DT is our biggest portal need.

Agree, we need a big body or two. We really missed an interior guy like Black or Carl Davis sized this year. The new guys played ok they just didn’t have that extra bulk. The bigger O lines such as Oregon were an issue. Unfortunately 6’5” and 340 that can move don’t grow on trees
