Less than 60k attendance on Saturday?

That's what making no coaching changes (other than giving your underperforming son a pay raise), reeling in the 12th best recruiting class in the conference, and a mediocre bowl game drubbing (followed by a "that's football") will do for fan enthusiasm. Those factors are a recipe for major fan apathy.

I for one, hope that we win by 45 points and generate a little buzz to get fans turned back around.

We've actually replaced most of our coaches in the last five years. I can't name them all but we have many new ones

Too bad the hot weather is keeping a lot of people away. I just hope that everyone that is capable of handling the does come to the game and stays hydrated. For the fans that can't attend for health reasons that is understandable. Cheer for the Hawkeyes at home if the heat is too much for you.

I remember going to the 1999 finale against Minnesota. Iowa was 1-9 (0-7) at that point. They actually played a close game against a decent Minnesota team before losing late. The crowd that day was around 55,000 which was the lowest that season and in the Ferentz era overall. It will be interesting to see if the numbers drop below that this year. With no-shows Saturday it might be lower but the university will still announce the 57,600 or whatever ends up selling.

It's Labor Day weekend and it is going to be hot. We win the first two games and I guarantee you the stadium will be closer to capacity for the Pitt night game. Winning fixes this issue. Amazes me we have a start of a new season and it seems many on here just want to ***** and complain and almost hope their team loses. Don't strain yourselves if they win and you have to start jumping back on the wagon. And if they do lose, then we will deal with that at the end of the season. I will be in Kinnick on Saturday as I will every home game this year. Win or lose. Doesn't mean I won't want change at the end of the year if it is disappointing but I am not going to sit at home. I'm in for 2015. Most pivotal year since 1998.

Well Barta and KF have nobody to blame for that do they?... Season can go one of two ways and it starts Saturday. Not so much after. If they come out and win an ugly game that'll get them few brownie points from fans. I don't think Kinnick will be rocking until say they win the first 3 games and show they mean business. Then I can see the fans packing the place. But if it looks like 7-8 wins and a not very exciting fun team to watch it could be a mostly empty stadium week in and week out and a long season...

57K is the official tally. That's roughly 1.3 million in lost revenue. Tic toc, Barta. You embarrassment.

Schedule also has something to do with it. If we were playing a better team that would certainly have helped attendance. I don't know of anyone who likes these type of games as well as playing another power 5 conference school. We don't like the FCS schools or MAC school games.

In the not too distant future tv revenue is going to much more than make up for any ticket revenue deficit. Just the way things are headed like the NFL in terms of revenue structure. Fans in the stands help motivate and win games and make it tougher on the opponent so yes fans in the stands make a difference. Some of the NFL games on tv makes one wonder if the stadiums were better than half full. Yet they make money and sell teams for huge money. That will continue to be the direction we are headed for the money because all those people at home with their big HDTVs that like to sit at home just add to the $$$$$ for tv. If we put a winner on the field certainly more fans will show in the stands just as in the NFL.

I am not so sure about that. Would you rather watch sit in the 90 degree heat and watch Iowa lose by 30 to a Top 10 team? It's not the weather that is keeping fans away....it is going into yet another season knowing with certainty that nothing great is going to happen.

Is it too much to say that Iowa is following the general trend in college football? College football attendance has been on a downward trend for the last five or ten years.

It's because of the one thing that Barta refuses to understand: attending an Iowa football game live is a TERRIBLE fan experience. Yes, there's the game and the band and and and. Every team has that to some extent. Most I-AA teams have that. But, at Iowa, you're stuck in a stadium with horrible cell phone reception. Getting to the building is a pain in the butt. Tailgating is difficult if you don't already have plans or a place to go. The stadium is old and has zilch for amenities.

What this means is that if you're not giving a great experience with the team, you don't have much else to offer. Iowa hasn't had much to offer with the team lately. Therefore, you're getting these sorts of attendance numbers.
