Legitimate question here.

I was in Section 131, row 15 for the game Saturday. All the grumpies around me were complaining about Jake's audibles. So stipulated. But from where I was standing I began wondering whether Jake can actually see over the line of scrimmage.

Can he actually see over the skirmish line to spot receivers downfield? I don't think he can.

If he cannot, and Kirk still insists in his granite heart on starting the kid based on his insane and perhaps broken risk/reward calculator, then that is yet another damning indictment of both Davis and Ferentz.

Let me explain my thinking here.

I wonder whether Kirk would value ball security and a willingness to "stick to the plan" over big play capability that many attirbute to CJB.

It's an hypothesis, but would Kirk evaluate those Jake-ish qualities above big play potential even if Jake is too short to see over the lines?

Jake is 6'3". If what you're saying is true, all of our QB's in the future should be at least 6'10"... Over 7' would be even better.

I thought he was 6' 1"

What, you are kidding I hope.

short nfl qbs
Flutie 5'10"
Sonny Jurgenson 5'11"
Drew Breese 6'0"
and the great one Seneca Wallace 5'11"

Then if my first hypothesis is wrong, it would appear I was giving the kid too much credit and there might be something seriously broken with the whole team.

I am trying to understand so the next games I see this year at Kinnick are less puzzling.

So he's then deliberately not throwing downfield, for whatever reason(s)?

I wonder if it relates to lack of confidence in the receivers making catches.

It's simple really.

1. KF doesn't always play the best players in certain positions.
2. Many of those who play are tentative because if they make a mistake they may find themselves in KF's doghouse.

Although your question is technically legit, it's naive to believe for one moment JR cannot see over the line. I would take away the run and the pass out in the flats on Iowa if I were defending them. We saw ISU do that Saturday and the result was JR tucking and running and looking scared and frustrated in the process.

Jon said on his Podcast that Davis needs to go and very quickly. He stopped short of saying KF should be gone however. But who hired Davis and keeps sticking with him? KF is the real problem in the football program. He's been good for the program in the past and now Iowa needs someone to take the Hawks to the next level. KF's philosophy will never do it in today's college football world.

Mason and Barta are as big a problem from the administration side of things.

I am still waiting for those who want Barta and Mason gone to supply some reasoning behind their assertions. You make the statement again with no explanation...why?

Kirk's philosophy has always been "play not to lose" and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Combine this attitude with the ineptitude of the Davis' offensive scheming and pipe dreaming and there are even fewer opportunities for big plays. This leads to fan frustration and boring, boring, boring Lickliterization of our football program.

Ok. Here are some reasons.

1. Barta gave KF the long term extension and it's one of the worst contracts in college sports.
2. Iowa is the WORST university in the B!G for sports.
3. Barta's only good hire in many peoples opinion is FM. And that took him 2 try's to get it right.
4. His firing of the field hockey coach. He gets a complaint from 1 disgruntled team member and fires the coach.

As for Mason, she is Barta's boss and it's that simple. He's good for raising money though.

I guess though as long as the dollars keep flowing in it's all good, correct?

Prof. I do think that you pose a good question. I'm sure that sometimes the QB can't see. That said, this is a known reality for QBs and often they have blocking schemes or move the QB around or drop the QB back deeper to mitigate this issue. They also have ' throw to a spot ' patterns as well.

A good QB finds a way.... more often than not.
