LB Benson to Iowa

“And if you’re not good enough, you’ll find that out after about a year or year and a half. You can always go down.

Does anyone else find this quote a little troubling?

Taken out of context like it has been here, perhaps. In the context of the story, no, I do not.

Yes, coaches next comment was optimistic, of course.
Still tho, that this was even said is odd.

Anyway, when I think SD, I think Greenway. So I'm sure this kid will bust his ass, which is never a bad thing.

Not really. He was set at South Dakota St. and now can use them as a safety net if it doesn't work out at Iowa, Pretty much most his family went there. They are a very tight family so I can see him wanting to play close so all can easily go to his games. He may have questioned if he'd be good enough for Div 1 P5 ball. Try it and if doesn't work out can transfer. Completely legit. There is always a certain attrition every year with players anyway.

It will be interesting to see if he can stick with it if it doesn't come easily the first year. Guys like that are used to success and starting. If it doesn't come easy at Iowa, he may have in his mind to change scenery where it could happen faster. I can see a player like him, so close to his family and a local college, getting homesick and wanting to transfer after the first year. That is my concern.

He may really like Iowa's campus and program and may grow on him, but I think there is a legit chance of losing him if it doesn't progress fast enough for him.

Watching this kid's highlights shows me he'll help immediately on special teams and with good speed will be in the mix for playing time, no redshirt for this kid.

Why the hell would anyone put that kind of expectations on an incoming freshman? Josey is once in a decade type player.

If he grows another inch and puts on 20 lbs. of muscle. 6' 2" 230 and runs a 4.6-40 by next fall. Man you gotta like his chances.
