Last year QB

What was the deal with the lack of snaps for QB#2? Is this a KOK or Kirk deal? Also why would you keep RS in with the amount of gametime he has had?

The reason I ask this is because what happens this year? With a new QB1 what happens? I would think with the new QB you would leave him in longer to work on things.....but with how things were run last year IDK. Is there more time when the position is more up for grabs?

I think that wienke should get a fighting chance. the kid has done nothing but a typical blue collar Iowa football player. he should get just as many snaps vs Tenn Tech, even if it is a close game.

give him the third and fifth drives of the first two games. by then we should be in control of the field position battle (assumably) and he could then start from at or near midfield with a result of no worse than punting deep in their territory in the event of a three & out.

if the fifth drive is close enough to the end of the half then throw out his second series opportunity. but he should get the opportunity for that third series for sure.

one reason why I say the third series is because for most CFB teams they would still be within the pre-scripted plays/scenarios developed in the weeks leading up to the game.

by doing this the first string (Vandy) has a chance to get more than just a few minutes to develop the plan for the remaining part of the game with the OC/coaches, because there would be a 2 defensive series and an offensive series (at least 7-10 minutes) between his snaps on the field.

I have always thought this would be a successful approach for EVERY team.

I agree. I think Ricky came out so strong because he was competing in real game time with JC6.

there is no reason you shouldn't do this.

I know the obvious reason, but perception is reality. when we exude the confidence by putting in our back-up the if and when our first string goes down, then the other team wouldn't be licking their chops, only cringing at the fact that the back-up went on a 7 play 60+ yard scoring drive early in the second quarter.

Vandys stats were sick last year.....minus it was only a couple drives. Two minute drills and giving the number 2s more time= a better Iowa team.

Excellent suggestions, guys. Ken, make a note: let's insert our 2's and 3's in the second and third quarters, give them some experience.
Kirk

Yeah, and they should blitz more, and go no-huddle more often, and run multiple receiver sets, and go with a 3-4 alignment on D, and put the O-coordinator up in the booth, and don't have the linebackers covering slot receivers and ...

Oh wait, it's Iowa.

My biggest complaint isn't the number of reps the back up QBs get, but the fact that when they do see the field in mop up duty they do nothing but get the opportunity to show off their ability to hand the ball off. Bottom line is that we could see the reserves the entire second half, but whether they actually throw a pass is a whole different story.

Typically number 2 QB's play when #1 gets hurt or preferably when you have a sizable lead. Year before we had few if any sizable leads, but Stanzi did get hurt. Last year we had a sizable lead in 2 or 3 games and we saw a little of JVB. However, what I can't explain nor do I want to try, is why we sub'd the way we did(n't) against MSU on offense in the 4th quarter.

If we have a former/current QB at P I doubt if we see anymore fakes than we have any other years, including those when Bradley was our punter. About once every 5 years we run a trick play on ST.

Iowa blew out very few other teams ... that is the primary reason why we kept Stanzi in the game.

When games got out of hand ... then Vandenberg saw reps. Furthermore, when Stanzi got dinged ... Vandenberg saw reps.

Why don't some of you-all realize that there is actually a REASON why Vandenberg is considered the #1 QB. First off ... Wienke and Derby have had all the opportunity in the world to make a push at Vandenberg in order to unseat him ... and yet Vandenberg has been able to hold his spot ... all the while being a great teammate (they all get along and help eachother out). It would seem to me that Vandenberg has won the spot fair and square.

Rather than allowing for an entitlement scenario to crop up by saying that Wienke "deserves" a shot ... how about the Hawks just blow out more opponents? That way, if that happens, then our backups can get more reps then ... simple as that.

And, for the record, from everything I've gathered, the team seems more focussed to do just that.

I dont think you are competing for a starting spot when you play in blowout mins(I think the competing is more in practice). I think its just good to get the other QBs comfortable on the field in case we need them.

I in no way know even 1% of any of the coaches football knowledge.

Its just more of a question I guess as to why we didnt see Vandy more last year? There were sometimes that as a fan you could have questioned why he wasnt in there.

i guess we should have expected off the cuff responses. I think it would demonstrate some Moxie and give kids a shot. every other position gets a rotation, it is wise to have an alternative option if and when the event our #1 goes down, rather than throw out two-thirds of our playbook because we have our 2nd string QB in the game. As conservative as KF is, you would think that he would have an "all-in" approach to the QB position. Nor should any coach, giving the back a shot would not hinder the the teams chances to win the game.

*no way am i saying that Weinke is better, just needs to have more than 2-3 career pass attempts under his belt and a handful of series. Vandy is our no doubt #1

you people saying we need to alternate qb's are the same ones that will complain when option 2 throws a pick 6 and the coaches put him back in the game

incorrect,

I could live with that. loosen up the slack on him until he makes a mistake. go back to my original premise: 3rd & 5th series of the first two games only.then you know what you got for the big ten slate.

but in the same idea, you play your 2nd string for 2 series in the first 2 games...say your starter gets hurt in the 10th game of the season(never happened before), you're telling me your 2nd string will still be ready?

Thats debateable. May work in your favor that you have seen him in REAL game situations and not just mop up duty. Even if it was against lesser opponents You will at least know what he can do in real situations with the 1st stringers. remember these are most likely still scripted plays that would have a more "controlled" feel to him.
