Concerns, hopes, fears?

1. Hope the Fran contract extension isn't premature. Should have waited until after the 2nd round, IMHO.

2. Concerned that JBo doesn't fall in love with jacking the ball up because it's his last season w/ Iowa. Let the game come to you buddy. Same with Wiesy. Garza= you can shoot all you want!!

So, if Fran loses to Oregon in the second round, Iowa should fire him? Or not extend him so he is a lame duck coach on the recruiting trail?

Could we do better than Fran? Maybe. Could the next guy be Steve Prohm? Little Pitino?Alford? Lick!!!!

Fran had a great year, deserved a raise and an extension, and Iowa made the smart move to extend him. You won't find any reasonable, objective basketball person who sees it differently.

Yawn.

May the madness commence.

Fran deserved the raise and extension, but come on, leave it to Barta to get the timing wrong. An after season extension seems more appropriate.

The Fran extension wasn't premature even if they somehow managed to lose 1st round. Which ain't happening.

Wieskamp isn't leaving.

Iowa was upping Fran regardless, no matter what happens this weekend. So, even if he loses, Iowa was going to extend him the normal 4 years that every school does with their coaches they want to keep. Smart to do it now so his agent can't use the tournament as leverage. I mean, if you want something regardless, get it while it's cheap or on sale.

Also, if Fran were to lose to Grand Canyon, Iowa was still going to up Fran for 4 more years. This tournament has no bearing on Iowa wanting Fran to be their basketball coach moving forward.

Exactly. This is how things work. Just because Barta did it does not make it automatically wrong.

No he should not be fired, but if he fails to make it passed the first weekend he should have a shorter contract extension (I would contend up to 2 years for recruiting purposes, increased base pay, and more monetary incentives for performance). 4 years is premature without a deep run (Elite 8 or better). We now have Fran on the hook/tab for 7 years total.

It is a stupid, desperate, early extension by Barta that could have waited. Fran is going nowhere. Nowhere....without at least a deep run and even then Barta can still sweep in there with a sweet deal that would keep him in Iowa City.

Again, if I'm Fran, I'm laughing my ass off behind Gary's ass all the way to the bank. My team could fall apart tomorrow and I have 4 more years of 7 figures salary to look forward to. Who needs a leprechaun in the month of March to get gold when you have Gary Barta for a boss.

The fact you think Fran even remotely thinks that way kind of makes your argument and opinion on it pretty null. No one wants Iowa to win more than Fran McCaffery. You are literally this boards worst poster by miles.

LOL. Well, don't take my word for it, you watch the reaction if Iowa fails to get out of the first weekend. This contract will be brought up numerous times. BTW, I'm not only one who thinks the contract is stupid at this time...other posters here agree and take a look at rivals.

I also don't know why (this is like the 2nd this week) where you throw out personal insults simply because you don't agree. Come on man, worse poster? Please.

Fran may not think that way, but giving out contracts like candy without earning them breeds contentment.

Personally, I think Iowa will get out of the first weekend. I don't think they got a good potential draw for the 2nd game, but I think they escape somehow. I'm not sure about the Sweet 16 depending on the match-up, but I think they will do it.

The buzz I'm starting to hear is Arkansas coach Eric Musselman is going to be a hot commodity if the Razorbacks don't pony up.

If they do, they are obviously waiting until after the tournament.
