Last night's officials

Calm down sunshine, all is still good. Alford is still at New Mexico and Iowa just won a post season game for the first time in.....heck I can't remember. Deep breath...happy thoughts......

They missed some travels on both ends and had some really bad calls. Dayton's center camped out in the lane a lot. McCabe was targted again for garbage whistles.

I didn't think the refs were good at all. In fact, they stunk.

You can't expect three guys operating in real time at court level to make all of the perfect calls. You can expect them to keep some sort of flow to the game, to be consistent in terms of what is and is not a foul, to not eat up a bunch of extra time with pointless reviews, and to make up calls when they blow one. By those standards, pretty great crew.

NO! NO! NO! Good officials do not compensate for errors by giving "make-up" calls. Never ever.

You learn early in your officiating career that two wrongs do not make a right. They just add another error to your previous one.

Your goal is to stop making mistakes.

I just found a thread about how good the refs were a little odd considering I know 13,100 people who thought they sucked.

Look, all I am saying is this crew made some terrible calls and looked like morons because of them.

Name a game where there AREN'T terrible calls. You can't because it doesn't exist. When you have 3 referees attempting to keep track of 10 athletic players screening, driving, rebounding, shooting, jumping, etc there are ALWAYS going to be bad calls or no-calls that should have been called. ALWAYS.

However, as long as they can keep the game flowing and not try to become part of the game, they can be considered a good crew. Last night's crew was as good as I've seen in a long time and were better than any Big Ten crew....period. End of discussion.

How many of those of you who thought the refs were good were at the game? Maybe it looked different on TV.

You had the advantage (or disadvantage) of being in a hyper-partisan crowd at the game. Many of the rest of us had the advantage (or disadvantage) of watching it at home and seeing a few of the calls (albeit just a few) replayed on video.

Yeah, these guys missed some calls. But I found it refreshing that they allowed play to continue, did not try to inject themselves too deeply into what is mostly a players' game and did not try to make themselves big on camera. I can't usually say that about most B1G crews.

Watch almost any basketball game that is in an arena that has a good crowd. They will boo nearly every call. Sounds like you need to go to more basketball games.

Who's digging? I saw a bunch of bad calls made from my seat at carver. It seems we have a bunch of fans who thought the refs were good from their seats at home.

So your opinion is that someone watching live will have a better judgement on appropriate foul calls than someone watching on tv that can rewatch? This seems to be misguided. After watching the game there were some questionable calls, but nothing that is not to be expected in a college basketball game. I actually thought the officiating was better than what we typically get in the btn.

That's why I keep telling you to rewatch it. You can watch it on ESPN3.

This game was not even close to being as bad as the UNI game or Northwestern.

I am only pointing out that from my vantage point, it appeared the zebras made some terrible calls, and that I was surprised to hear from so many TV viewers that the refs were great.

You also pointed out that you have been to more basketball games than me. :( :D
