Last night's officials

Despite the booing from a raucous CHA crowd (wow, when was the last time a CHA crowd could be described as raucous?) for every call that went against Iowa or was not made for the local team, I thought the officiating was pretty good, regardless of the outcome of the game.

I do not recognize their names: Gerry Pollard, Lamar Simpson, Keith Kimbell. Do they typically work the B1G?

I do not think it is a coincidence that this was a crew that did not include the names Hightower or Valentine and Zach McCabe managing to play 32 of 40 minutes, grabbing 8 rebounds, scoring 20 points and getting only 4 fouls while playing aggressively mostly in the lane (and one of those, IIRC, was fouling a player to stop a break-away following a turnover.) Granted, Dayton is not a Michigan State and this game did not include the usual B1G mugging that takes place under the basket.
 




I was going to start a thread about how terrible the reffs were last night. I was in the crowd, and I thought the booing was well justified.
 


There were a handful of calls that did no go Iowa's way but there were also a few that did not go Daytons way. It all evened out and I loved the fact none of these officials let Fran or the crowd get to them and we did not see any official showboating in front of the cameras.

Bring them to Oregon.
 


They did an alright job...the one call was just awful when carver went nuts against thr official.
 


Morehouse says they were from the Summit League. From what was shown on TV, it appeared they did an OK job. In person, it may have looked different.

These officials missed calls and got a few wrong, but they were making mistakes on both sides. This officiating was no where near as bad as NW or UNI. I don't mind officials screwing up calls once in a while, they are human, as long as it is called both ways. I seen a few anticipation fouls called and that could have been because they were used to officiating Summit league games.

This kind of talking probably goes on at 75% of college basketball games. It's how we roll as sports fans. The calls are always bad whenever they go against our teams.
 




You can't expect three guys operating in real time at court level to make all of the perfect calls. You can expect them to keep some sort of flow to the game, to be consistent in terms of what is and is not a foul, to not eat up a bunch of extra time with pointless reviews, and to make up calls when they blow one. By those standards, pretty great crew.
 




My opinion of a good referee'd basketball game has little to do with calls and more to do with flow of the game.

Referee's are human and are going to miss some obvious calls and make some calls that are questionable. But a good crew of referee's don't take away from the flow of the game and this crew did a great job of not doing that.

This game had as good a flow as any game I can remember in a long time. The announcers last night even commented on the proclivity for Big Ten referees to call way too many ticky tack fouls in the 2nd half and if you watch Big Ten games enough, you know they are exactly right. Too often in the 2nd half of conference games, it's like watching paint dry because the refs tighten up WAY too much and don't allow the game to flow naturally.

This crew did a good job of getting most of the calls right and letting the game flow naturally. They didn't try to pimp for the camera, they didn't try to interject themselves into the game and try to become part of the game like so many Big Ten refs do. It was actually a breath of fresh air, to be quite honest.

Basketball is a game of athleticism, motion and fluidity...it is not a game of touch football like so many Big Ten teams have tried to turn it into. A good crew will allow the games natural tendencies to shine and discourage and punish physical play. Back in the 80's and 90's, when Big Ten teams routinely scored in the high 70's, 80's and even 90's, that is how the coaches coached and that is how the referees ref'd.....and that was as fun a time to watch basketball as any time in the conference's history. I hope we can get back to that someday.

I didn't think that the officiating was great but it did seem to at least be impartial which made me happy. I wish we could see more of this from the B1G officials.
 


The fact that the calls were bad in both directions does not negate the fact that the officials were terrible. I was not trying to say that they were badly against the hawks, just that they were not good at their jobs.

But calling it fair is about all we can ask for and I should not have used the word "bad", mistakes is a better word. Like another poster just mentioned we did not see officials try to take a game over nor did they try to get camera time. When Fran got jawing they did not get in his face, they let the game continue and allowed Fran to cool off on his own.
 


Look, all I am saying is this crew made some terrible calls and looked like morons because of them.
 




The Refs were not bad my any means, that doesn't mean they missed calls, but they also made some good no calls. AW had a follow up dunk where he pulled himself up a little and the official said something to him about it right after that during a time out.

Sure there is going to be bad calls in a BB game it is just bound to happen, but they did a good job of making themselves not be a big part of the game at all.
