There were a handful of games that day, shows how strong ESPN still is when Air Force and Wash St beat our game in the ratings war.

Nielsen Ratings last Friday 12/27/19

Texas Bowl (Oklahoma State vs Texas A&M): 4.895 million
Pinstripe Bowl (Michigan State vs Wake Forest): 3.795 million
Cheez It Bowl (Air Force vs Washington State): 2.617 million
Holiday Bowl (Iowa vs USC): 2.500 million (first time the bowl had over 2 million viewers since FS1 acquired the rights to it)
Military Bowl (North Carolina vs Temple): 2.071 million

Thanks. I'd be really interested in seeing their analytics formula for sports now. I think a lot of people flip channels frequently during commercials and unless they have a rooting interest, they have no loyalty to a particular game if it gets out of hand.

you have to consider our game was on a Friday night during a holiday where people went out for dinner or the bars and were not at home watching the Holiday Bowl. Do you really think Americans would rather watch Michigan St vs Wake Forest vs. our game? The MSU game was a day game when people were lounging around at home.

I dont care about some ratings numbers because how do they count them? How do they know if I am streaming on internet TV , I mean really. The streaming services are not giving the numbers of their viewers who are watching certain shows. If they are doing ratings like Nielson used to with a certain cross section of viewers having their box plugged in then this whole measure is about as accurate as political polling. Not.

Most “basic” packages don’t include FS1. As was mentioned earlier, if our game was on ESPN at 7pm, it pulls in north of 5 million.

If the MSU game wasn't as boring from the end of the 1st half on, yes I would think that. It was brutal takeaway Iowa elation at revenge.

Keep those # in mind when they start publishing college basketball numbers - the marquee matchups don't pull in numbers like those bowl games.

The problem wasn't the matchup the problem was with the game being on FS1. Put that game on ESPN or one of the major networks and it blows out those numbers.

This. If I'm home channel surfing, I never think to go to FS1 to see what's on. I kind of forget about it. They call it "on National TV" but it definitely is not ABC, FOX or SECSPN, etc.. It is still kind of that hidden station.

It's that obscure hidden pizza place that has decent pizza when you do eat it. You find yourself saying "Man, this ain't bad. We should come here more." ..... but you again forget about is shortly after that.

It is still a measure of what most typical Americans are watching. Still provides a % they can measure.

Dang... I'm surprised more Hawk fans weren't watching frankly. But as far as casual fans go yeah FS1 just isn't main stream enough to get casual flippers without a rooting interest. I never watch it unless Iowa is on. Or a game with ties to it of some sort. ESPN is on in every bar and just all over the place all the dang time. Which is too bad for Joel Klatt and Gus Johnson. Those two to me for my $ are the best at what they do. ESPN should be throwing blank checks at them to try and steal them away.

ESPN realized several years ago that good content trumps on air talent in their markets and they fired almost all of their on air talent that earned what they deemed to be too much money. The realized it is better to spend $300 million to get the rights to the SEC marquis game than to spend $300 million talking heads.

That’s certainly the case for me.

I would conclude the USC audience didn’t keep up their end of the bargain

2.5 million is like the entire population of Iowa.

I’d say Calis didn’t keep up their end of the bargain.
True very true.. But that may go to show how down on Helton and the program that fan base is. But I agree between both fan bases that has to be a disappointing number to the powers that be.
