Lane Kiffin fiasco

I remember that when the last coach left his school to join LSU and not a single coach followed him. They elevated an assistant and the rest of the crew stuck at Notre Dame. Would love to see something similar here.

Crazy they elevated the DC to HC. Not interim. Signed him to a contract. The rest of the coaching staff will clearly have some leverage to stay or go.

I too like that the AD told Kiffin to pound sand. I mean, no one really did anything wrong here. Kiffin's hand was forced by LSU and the dumb NCAA transfer calendar. They had to announce when they did. But, letting him coach through the playoffs while he is recruiting those same kids to transfer with him would be untenable. In general, coaching one team and recruiting for another just does not work.

He is leaving a playoff team for a non-playoff team who fires coaches for winning 9 games. He better make sure his buyout is fully guaranteed, before that moronic governor gets involved.

Sounds like Kiffins offensive staff is following him to LSU all but the WR coach. Making their prep for the playoffs extremely interesting. How do you hire more dudes right freaking now? Well that DC that's now the new HC is probably burning up the phones trying to do that this morning. Losing just your OC would be problematic by itself but they literally lost everyone but the WR coach from that side of the ball. And Kiffin himself I think is pretty hands on with the O.

But what if even more had decided to follow him? Say the DC and a couple other position coaches from that side did too would Ole Miss have had to bow out of the playoffs all together? The selection committee woulda just not picked them is probably what'd have happened. What a travesty that'd have been cause they deserve to be.

There is no way they bow out of the playoffs. Too much money involved. And, I believe I read that Joe Judge would be an interim coach if Kiffin left. That may not be happening now that they've hired the DC as head coach. But I bet they cobble enough coaches together to come in for the playoffs using their current systems for offense and defense. Certainly not ideal.

Well the decision wouldn't be theirs to make. The committee can leave them out. Kinda like how they left FSU out cause their QB was hurt a yr or two ago. They'd say they don't have enough of a staff and just pick another school instead.

Obviously Ole Miss wants to be in it and they should be. They have as good a case as anyone this side of OSU and Indiana. They only have the 1 loss I think.

This is true. But Florida State was pretty borderline and I don't see that being the case for Ole Miss. But anything is possible.

To hit multiple threads here, maybe this is what we have going with Fry's info. DeBoer wants the Iowa gig, but he wants a chance to coach Alabama in the playoffs. Convos are happening behind the scenes. Hard to believe zero info would have leaked though.

DeBoer? Seriously.

Is there really a scenario where a candidate is still coaching his team through the playoffs, and that coach wants to leave the program in the playoffs and come to Iowa? Did Beth's HC budget jump up to 12 million when I wasn't looking? Come on. Maybe it is a lower level coach that is in a championship game or lower level playoffs and doesn't want to announce until the season is over. I could see that. There are just no signs that is happening behind the scenes though.

I have never heard the name DeBoer mentioned in any way and if that conversation were happening it'd likely be on ESPN pretty quickly. Zero chance something like that doesn't get leaked to someone nationally. That would be insane-o.

If they (whoever "they" is) wants to put the reigns on the mid-year coaching circuses, they'd have to change the portal window date. The way it is now you almost have to make your changes--whether firing or leaving--before the end of the season.

$$$ is a great negotiator

This is what I see ultimately happening. They screwed up and made the one transfer period with a stupid date range. In my opinion maybe a time after the Spring would be best. In most cases hires would be made and you had a chance to go through Spring practice with the new coach. If the player or coach don't see you fitting in then you can enter the portal and get to a school before summer workouts start. I would also like to see a cap placed on how many times you can move but it's the NCAA so I'm sure they will make every wrong move

I do not think it is DeBoer. But I am having fun with my Pelican Brief fantasies after Fry stated his intel.

This is what I said on one of the threads last week though. DeBoer is not happy at Alabama. He worries about the safety of his wife and youngest daughter and the threats they've received (older daughter plays softball at UW). He had mixed feelings within days of accepting the position. His OC (Grubb) bailed on him and only rejoined after getting fired from the Seahawks. Grubb's wife, who is black, does not want to live in Alabama.

Alabama is currently in the playoffs, but not by much. It would only take an upset this weekend to knock them out, which would put DeBoer right back on the hot seat. If Alabama fires him at some point, he keeps his Alabama level salary, with Beth only paying him 80% of it. DeBoer likely realizes he won't last much longer at Alabama, and quite possibly doesn't want to be there.

I do not think the DeBoer-Pelican Brief is likely true.

That said, do you see any lower level candidate out there in which Beth would kick Kirk to the curb after a really solid season, and bypass any kind of search/interview process? I don't think there is an obvious enough candidate at lower levels to pull a coup on Kirk like that. Our mystery candidate has to fit the scenario Fry has outlined.

That'd sure stir up things too if say he decided to go to PSU. That search is dragging on and on it makes you wonder.. I've seen where PSU fans have all but crossed him off their list though. But who knows we've seen crazier

I think we are getting somewhere! So can we just keep guessing guys for the mystery candidate and you'll say Yea/Nay as to whether that's the name you heard mentioned?
