A lot of blame has been put on Barta, Ferentz, Coordinators and position coaches and i don't necessarily disagree with some of that but a huge issue i see is leadership within the team. I've played enough competitive sports to know that team talent, coaching and game planning can get you so far but there's an extra gear a team can tap into with productive leaders in the locker room/huddle and i just don't see that here.
If you look at who got us out of our last rut (2005,06,07) the team had difference makers with heart like kroul, king, Brodell, Edds, Stanzi These guys weren't superstars but they were a great mix of outspoken leaders and guys who worked their tails off and led by example, they battled in 2008 and set up for a great 2009. Last year it seemed like the LB's and Lowery played with a chip on their shoulders and finished the regular season really strong, they played with toughness.
This season all I've seen is a team that buckles under pressure and nobody stepping up and saying we cant change the coaching staff, we can't change who's beside us on the field but we can come together as a group and play "hawkeye football" which to me still means lining up, giving everything you've got every snap and battling.
Other than a possible OC change we all know things are going to generally stay the same from a staffing perspective so who is going to change this teams culture from within?Desmond King, Tevaun Smith, maybe the young LB group? where is the toughness and attitude going to come from? You can't say that's not Ferentz football because we've had it before and maybe i'm way off here but i really think we need some more of that to turn this thing around. To me its the most realistic change that could be implemented, just look at Minnesota, its not talent, its culture and yes it starts from above but it can easily be formed from within, just need the right guys to step up and lead.
