I have always been confused about the USS Iowa. When I was a kid i was taught it was de-comisioned and voluntarily sunk in a naval grave yard. Then it was brought back.

Never sunk. The USS Iowa was "mothballed" after the Korean War but was reactivated, modernized and recommissioned in 1984 as part of the 600-ship Navy plan and operated in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets to counter the recently expanded Soviet Navy. I attended the recommissioning in Pascagoula, Miss. Pretty impressive ship and amazing to watch the sailors rush onboard to take up positions when all hands were called on deck. But in all honestly it was obsolete in terms of modern warfare, even 30 years ago. She was decommissioned in 1990 and struck in 2006.
