Kyle Meyer and who else

Iowa has PF/C Kyle Meyer committed at this point. With four scholarships open and maybe not a need to fill all four, what players and it is early, would you prefer to add with Meyer?
Here are mine:

PG-Ka'Darryl Bell
CG-Mike Gesell
C-Adam Woodbury

Next three if opportunity presents itself:
CG-Jelon Hornbeak
SF-Danuel House
SG-Kenny Gaines

Actually, any combination of these six would be great.

The big question that lingers with Woodbury is, with the addition of Olaseni and Meyer, is Iowa better served not pursuing Woodbury and land a pure PG and then add more overall athleticism?
People claim Woodbury is Iowa's to lose, but how accurate is that really? I have stated before that this position is not a good one, especially if he hasn't verballed. I hold nothing against Woodbury for that, Iowa has not been good and he should explore all his options.
This recruiting class is going to be a big key to Iowa's long term success, Iowa will have to find a quality replacement for Cartwright. The PG position is critical, maybe Iowa goes after a JC guy and a freshman that can learn. Does Iowa have that luxury? With the way the rest of the roster is shaping up, they just might, time will tell. It is fun to ponder the endless scenarios.

IMO Iowa sits as well as they probably can with Woodbury. They have been in on him since the beginning and have put alot of time into recruiting he and Gesell. He has been a Hawk been for at least a few years and very recently attended a Hawkeye booster gathering in SC.
Does that him him Iowas to lose? I don't think so,kids make all kinds of strange choices and bright lights can easily confuse them BUT FM and staff have probably done as much as they can to this point.
As far as a PG goes,I expect FM plans on a more team concept on handling the ball. Meaning have 2-3 people that can adequately handle the rock to get them into the offense.
I believe he wants Gesell to be his next PG and will try to keep adding guys like Hubbard and Marble who aren't 1's but can serve the purpose short term. Olaseni seems to be the only recruit this year that isn't figuring to handle the ball at least some.
To me its obvious that AW and MG are his first two targets and from there he is just too tight on his info to know who else is in the mix. I'd like to see him find a more refined Eric May to round out his next class. Maybe a Josh O. who can handle, drive and finish, and shoot the three.

With Adam getting interest from North Carolina/KU/etc AND he's 7-foot AND he's in our state from the city our lead assistant coach is from.....he should and most likely has been the main target for 2012 since after week 1 of the staff being in Iowa City.

We need major talent infusion regardless of position. We should not worry about over depth at post positions. We never know who may or may not be leaving for whatever reason.

Give me Hornbeak with Gessell & Woodbury. Fran has already spread from coast to coast with Cartwright (Cal) and Basabe (NY). Now lets starting hitting up talent from Texas.

The only part of McCaffrey's strategy that has me a bit perplexed is the lack of a PG get for this season. Hard to believe we either didn't want, or couldn't find, a juco to come in and give us some depth and provide experience after BC graduates. I am not a fan of PG by committee and if memory serves, this was not the case with his good Siena teams.

Therefore I am more concerned about a legit PG acquisition for next season. If that's Gessel in McCaffrey's eyes, then so be it, but the big ten year after year has strong guard play and we have fallen behind in the arms race. I am intrigued by Woodbury, but without strong PG play, everyone on the team will struggle as we aren't incredibly dynamic athletically.

I totally agree with Baldies post. About all we can count on now with Woodbury is that his family are true Hawk fans and can influence him to stay in state and play for Iowa. He is going to get a lot of offers from schools that are obviously better than we are NOW, but if he sees the light at the end of the tunnel as many of us do, he may well decide to sign on and help us make the transformation from basement dweller to contender. Gessell would be a nice signee as well, but there are a lot of PG's out there whereas there are very few true centers. I hope we get both of them.

I'm with hawkIhoops in that I don't understand no PG this year, but that ship has sailed. The other thing I don't get is where some people get the idea that we can bank schollies. We are in need of players, good, solid players, if not great players, we cannot be banking scholarships with the need for talent that we have. I really hope the Woodbury and Gessell are in and then some 6'6" to 6'8" guys that can slash, run, finish and rebound. Hope I'm not asking too much. I really like this coach and his approach, hope it leads to good things for the Hawks!

I agree that Woody,Gesell, and Hornbeck would be a great haul for Iowa, along with Meyer.
I also agree that I am puzzled that we did not scrounge up a juco pg that could have given us insurance this year, and transition Gesell to the pg position next year. Made total sense to me.
Woodbury is a big recruit for Iowa, and we need to land him. Gesell would be big also.
Hornbeck would be huge, but not counting on him. I think with Meyer and hopefully Woodbury on board,we need athletic guards, bigtime.

Iowa needs to get off to a strong start next season. These kids need to start seeing the improvement in order to really buy into what Fran is selling.

I think those are the two Iowa fills, but I anticipate Fran filling three for sure.

If there are three, who do you think would be a likely target?

It doesn't matter how they start next year, to me, it is more important that Iowa gets Gessel and Woodbury before the season begins, or they won't get either of them, my opinion.
A strong start to the season and a strong class in the fall may get a huge recruit or two for 2013.

+1. We better have our 2012 class locked up in November. As exciting as Spring recruiting can be, its something I hope we dont have to do for a very long time.

What I'm not sure I will ever understand about this class is that lack of attention Iowa seems to be giving to Wesley Staten from Sioux City. He seems like he would be an ideal combo guard for the Iowa system, and according to most recruiting sites, he has at least some interest in the Hawkeyes; however, he still apparently lacks an offer. I think a class of Meyer, Woodbury, Staten, Gesell, and a juco would be a really solid class and would set the Hawks up for extended success.

I have heard that Staten and Woodbury don't get along. If true, that might be the reason. Which kid would you rather have?

I would rather have Staten, but I know most people would rather have Woodbury. I would also rather have Woodbury and Gesell than just Staten.

I hear you Ihoops. A juco PG would have been perfect, from my eyes. That said, I definitely trust coach's eyes more than mine! My guess is that he couldn't find anyone that was up to snuff and/or Fran felt comfortable with what we have. It is either that or we are still looking for the right fit pg. Remember we did not get Cartwright until June last year...
We can still find a Cartwright. I for one would feel much more comfortable with another pg for 2011 & 2012. With a top knotch pg freshman for 2012 - Gesell.

Question on MG: Will he be able to make a smooth transition to PG?

It sounds like it, he is a point guard now. They say he can drive and then score or dish. With Martin Bros he is moved over for some of the game because of Payne.
But I suppose that is another reason to have a juco come in with some experience. At the very least, be a good backup to Gesell...
