Kobe fined for saying a "slur"

What he did was totally inappropriate but I do get tired of the PC in alot of situations....everyone is afraid to say anything that might be construed as not PC. But slurs are counterproductive.

Thank God. Amen. How hard is it to be accepting?

There is a lot of ignorance and intolerance in this thread. There are also people posting here with a lot of hate inside them.

No one can force them to become less ignorant, less intolerant, less hateful. My only wish is that they can someday recognize it for themselves and atone for it.

Props to Duff & others for speaking up for what you believe in (which, in truth, is basic human decency), but it's really falling on some deaf ears.

Obviously inappropriate, inexcusable and not okay. Kobe has acknowledged this multiple times since the incident. He completely owns it and agrees that it's not okay, and he apologized for it. That's all there is to this.

On another note, "political correctness" is when society downplays competition or shields people from failure. Recognizing that words like f***** and n***** shouldn't be said is not political correctness. It is interpersonal decency. They're offensive slurs, whether or not you view them that way in your day-to-day life. They're impolite to say the very least. As such, you probably shouldn't say them.

Kobe is a dick, and so are you.

Is this directed towards me? I don't care about the NBA, and I care even less about Kobe Bryant. I think it's pretty clear that I wasn't defending him. I merely pointed out that he acknowledged his language wasn't okay, regardless of the excuse. He's right about that.

Wow, I actually totally agree with you for once, DuffMan. That's totally unacceptable by Kobe and yes, it is a big deal. The prejudice against homosexuals is really getting old, just like it is and has been forever when it comes to the prejudice against black people. I agree that our country is overly PC, but imagine the uproar if the ref had called Kobe a stupid you know what. People would be calling for the ref's head. Just not cool on Kobe's part at all. You'd think that the guy could show a little more maturity and composure.

Why would it have been directed at you?

SO sick of people veiling their personal bigotry as rage directed against "political correctness". I wish the term "PC" had never been coined.

It is a complete and total cowardly cop out. These types would rather hide behind "I'm so sick of our PC society" rather than come out and say "I do not like gays". At least the 2nd statement is honest.

If the term "PC" had been around back during civil rights movement days, you can bet people would have been "sick of the PC police" trying to tell us that blacks shouldn't be excluded from "white" schools.

I completely agree with Duff and GoHawks.

Some people don't understand that to a gay person, being called a f**got by someone who is intentionally trying to demoralize them, or make them feel inferior, is the EXACT SAME as someone calling a black person a n*gg*r under the same circumstances. Kobe may have only been trying to put the guy down, and he's probably straight, but it doesn't matter. The intent is the same.

Also.....kids may be watching. What does it teach them if people have an attitude of "oh, he was just putting the guy down". Look, it's NOT the same as calling someone a DB, or a MF. Not even close.

To the OP:
Those Irish slurs you listed are NOT alright either. It's the wrong message to teach our kids.

I am just saying as far as "PC" goes, some people don't want to say things, and I think Cam Newton is a good example. Some draft guys rip on him (for very valid character questions) and Warren Moon screams racism.

I feel like Cam brought all of these questions upon himself when he shopped his signature around. And really as far as I am concerned, NFL teams are going to dish out millions, nothing is off limits to them.

Those are very offensive names and have nothing to do with "growing a set."

I agree that there is too much PC these days, thus, when we get angry (or maybe just for fun) whites (or anyone) should be able to call blacks "ni$gers, jungle bunnies, and so on" and blacks should just grow a set.

This....well said couldn't agree more with you and hobo.

I don't see the problem with that. Black people just need thicker skin.

Not really sure what you are getting at here? Thicker skin? really? Based on the hypothetical battman gave......thicker skin????

Classic NBA white-wash (no pun intended), trying to avoid a PC-generated lawsuit or bad pub.

The pussification of America continues.

You just offended every fool on earth, you are inconsiderate of that group! You are now fined $100,000 for your insensitive comments.

Comparing the N bomb to f*ggot isn't even close. The N bomb roots from all the years of slavery where people were killed, raped, and sold. Gays haven't been slaves for hundreds of years and during those years called fa*s. Now I could care less if someone is gay or not, its not my business, but a straight guy being called a f*g doesn't deserve $100,000. It should be a $15,000 dollar fine just like Chris Paul got earlier this year for "verbally abusing" a ref.

I believe Duffman was just putting that out there because the OP said something like gays need to get a thicker skin. I am positive it was full of sarcasm, and was trying to open the eyes of the OP to how ridiculous his statement was. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.
