Kirk's offense in a nutshell

If there's a "poster child" play for Kirk's offensive ineptitude (pun intended) it would be that audible into the stretch run into the short sideline. Why... does this still happen? Everybody in the stadium knows that play call and it's extremely rare that it gains significant yardage.

Why?

There are sarcastic answers, but those only make us feel temporarily better. In the event you need reminding - no answer will be given. So, we're left to ponder the imponderable.

Does anyone have real stats on how often we audible into a pass? I feel like its got to be 90/10 run/pass when we change the play at the line.

It's a bizarre play when you think about it.
There are 2 things you want for a RB, especially a Wadley-type RB.
You want them to have space so he can juke the defender out of his jock strap.
But you also want them to have an escape route if a defender guess' correctly.
The short side takes away both. Open space becomes a bottleneck, and it also gives the RB no where to go if he makes one defender miss. He's boxed in by the sideline and another person in front him, which sometimes is his own teammate who has tripped or been shoved backwards.

I can literally only remember once, maybe twice this season where the audible was a pass

The best run blockers are usually on the left side. QB comes to the line scrimmage sees where the mike linebacker is at, does a numbers count of who is in the box and adjusts accordingly.

Before people come at me I am just throwing shit out there. I do know it has something to do with a numbers count by the QB.

The issue comes with defense knowing this, showing one formation...and then playing the other.

Is almost rather see us throw a 3 step deep shot every time than a short side run.

You can get away with it, maybe, with a veteran-good Oline and a bulldozer RB...maybe...for 3-4 yards...maybe. not with a speed speed back and frosh O tackles.

KF answer to this question is frustrating to hear. Even though defense has 8-10 guys in the box, they will stick to the run regardless.

When you go up against eight, nine, maybe 10 guys in the box is one play called and run into a brick wall or can something be done differently?

COACH FERENTZ: Every situation is a little different. There are some situations where we have run/pass flexibility. There are others where we're going to run the play regardless. Just depends on the situation. So every play is a little bit different. And hopefully we're getting into good run plays trying to avoid dead plays. We've always tried to do that. Run or pass, try to get out of a dead play.

Yes, that's the methodology. But it's based on a flawed assumption and plain and simple....bad math. The reason there are fewer plays on the short side (often including the Mike) is that IT'S EASIER TO COVER AS IT'S LESS TERRITORY. That set on the defense does NOT indicate an opportunity. It indicates that they have their defense properly balanced for the field position.

The maddening thing is this; how many times have they watched this on film and seen that it DOESN'T WORK!!! Yet...Kirk still insists we do it. (Yes, Kirk. It happened under KOK, GDGD and BF. It's the Head Coach that keeps it in the playbook)

Forcing the square peg into a round hole is it. Other coaches adjust based on the players they have and what the defense gives them. Not Kirk.

I think play-calling has been in a nutSACK, not a nutshell.

No counter argument, if they were using it to set up something later in the game it would be one thing. The majority of the time Iowa isn’t trying to set something up so it’s literally a wasted play.
