Kirk’s first statement

Kirk evades the question of whether he will return next season.

You will also note that he stated that he usually likes to wait to the end of the season to make these types of decision. He expounds on it in the question and answer session. You can sense he is upset about the situation.

His response was about what I expected. He made a big point about the turnovers having a big impact on the offense. I wish the reporters would have pushed back more on that topic and brought up the specific examples of Hill being directly responsible for all three turnovers in the last game and Labas's performance in the bowl game. Not that it matters I'm sure KF would've danced around that question too.

Pretty Kirklike.
I really like Kirk when he breaks ranks from his usual Kirkness and displays a little genuine emotion and human-ness. Example: "Crap"

But that's a really sticky situation here. On one hand, you want him to say "Yeah, it sucks. He's my family".....but that's admitting to the core problem of nepotism. Or "yeah, it sucks, I would have liked more say in this, it's my team"....but that's negating the concept of the AD and the University. I think the "chain of command" concept was a really good way to thread that needle. And when he talks about the 'here and now/day-to-day' and leaving other discussions til the end of the year? That's in line with what he always says. Sure, there's some subtext, but he didn't fire any shots. I wouldn't even call those jabs. It's pretty honest and direct without confrontation.

That's the beauty of sticking with his regular mantra. You can't say he said anything "wrong" or "different" here. And it can answer every question without actually answering it.

I started off wanting to say "just be honest and direct, Coach....like you do on rare occasions and we really enjoy it." Just no good way for him to do it.

I'll give him an A, because I think he did a good job threading the needle and it's a positive sign for now.

It's fair he evaluates everything after each season. However, he created the timing of this by not replacing his son after last season, which is not the only season Iowa's offense was bad under BF.

After last season he could have let the worthless o-line coach go, removed BF as the OC and made him the o-line coach and hired a good OC and let him run the offense for the program. If he'd done these things I truly doubt we'd be in the situation we are in today.

Again, KF, this is all on you because of your pride or ego or whatever it was that made you think your son was doing the job as OC, although I think he really tried to the best of his ability which the stats prove to be not good at all.

Q: When were you notified by Beth Goetz?

A: "I had access to the announcement that you read, we all read. Over the weekend, yeah that was the timeline."

This is going to get nasty.
Emotions are fresh right now. Time heals all wounds. At the end of the year it won’t be just about Brian being let go, but also about all of the players and coaches.

Just a thought, if Kirk is going to stay around he could have easily talked about the new recruits coming in and expectations moving forward. That’s normal in any college football program. If that is the case you don’t want everyone running to the portal, especially in coming recruits. However, emotions are fresh right now. It’s obvious that Beth is a new sheriff in town and she is not playing by Gary’s standards. Gary would have waited to the end of the season and who knows how that would have worked out. I’ve said it before………….. wasn’t Barta’s timing interesting on his retirement?

By the way in the You Tube video the camera gets crazy but eventually Beth takes questions off to the side of the room.

Exactly. KF did not do his job at the end of last season, and now he forced his boss to do her job in the middle of this season. It is what it is, but you son did not just start sucking in the last couple months, Kirk.

But some leave scars...

I don't think BG cares if it gets nasty. A good Ad wouldn't care. She's doing her job because KF did not do his after last season. Plus as others have stated that are more in the know than me, some big donors were on board with this move.

I am willing to say she has more support right now for this move than KF does with the timing of it that he doesn't like.

I'd be willing to say if BG didn't make this move now, after the season KF would not have fired his son. BF may have and probably would have stepped down on his own, but his dad wasn't going to fire him. That would be hell to pay on the home front which is likely not a happy place right now for KF anyway.

He looked really tired and emotionally drained during the presser. It'd be hard not to be. But again, he created this mess by himself

Kirk and to a lesser degree Brian f*cked it all up. They are the reason for all the drama. There was a lane for Brian to be Kirk’s successor, but assuming Brian would be rubber stamped as the next head coach was their fatal flaw.

Beth and Gary are like opposites of each other. It’s interesting that their initials are the way they are. GB vrs BG…………… hmmmmm what if CAT really spelled DOG? (See “Revenge of the Nerds” movie)

KF will leave after the season. PP follow Kirk, as will probably all of the assistants. George Barnett will be deservedly fired or quit first.

This season is it. Most of the Never Ferentz crowd that feel 8-5 as a bad season are going to get a steady diet of 5-8 results.

However, with the need to promote the west coast programs, and the new media environment, schools like Iowa are just necessary to provide the top 8 or 9 programs enough wins to stay competitive with each other.

I was just thinking the same thing! GB and BG have the exact opposite initials!

I recommend people read the story from Jacob Keppen on Hawkeye Wire.

It could not have been said better then what he wrote.

Well done Jacob!

He’s pissed. It’s clear to me that he is no longer the alpha. He has a boss for the first time in a long time. Never again will it be said that” he can stay as long as he wants”. No need to. No Beth isn’t going to fire him. But there is a new power dynamic. He’s free to go and I think Beth is prepared for that when it comes

Kirk doesn’t owe Iowa anything. He won’t show up just for the money. He’ll cool off and consider options in off season

Agree I believe underneath he was simmering but her remained professional and genuine. He started to go down the excuse path for a minute but pulled it back quickly and remained focused on the game and season ahead. Thank God he didn't express his "feelings" by the worst Q of the day when a reporter asked him how the decision made him feel. God, how did she get a press pass?

That's why this needed to be done last year. The current offensive philosophy will not fly with the changing offenses Iowa will be facing starting next year. Almost every other Big Ten program is making their moves while Iowa is standing pat. Going 5-8 might be overly optimistic.
