Kirk still has a chance to hit one out of the park...

I knew Parker would be DC...he had the job the second Norm retired. Kirk didn't announce it because he obviously didn't think it was that big a deal....just keep on keepin' on...move along..nothing to see here.

Now the OC is a different animal. Iowa's offense is...to put it kindly....mediocre at best (the stats bear this out). IMO, Kirk REALLY needs to get some fresh blood and new ideas into the program. This hire will be very telling. If he just promotes from within, then it just shows he is content with things as they are.....happy to play it safe and not take any risks.

I"m still holding out hope. But not too much, because I have a feeling I already know what will happen.

He'll name Soup Campbell OC what else would happen? He's not going to do anything to freahen things up other than name Brian Ferentz to some position.

First he already hit one out of the park.

Iowa's offensive philosophy that Kirk will almost certainly make a mandatory requirement for any OC is as follows.

1) Do not under any circumstances turn the ball over
2) Play field position

Iowa's offense is basically defense also. As silly as it sounds, it isn't predicated on scoring, it's predicated on making it as difficult for the other team to score as possible, and that is done with field position.

Correct. Kurt was on the staff that built Baltimore up on a good o-line and a good defense plus the golden arm of Trent Dilfer. If Kurt lucks into the right offensive players, you might see a killer offense, but he ain't gonna change the philosophy. I fear a pretty big backslide without O'Keefe.

Screw it hire Jim Walden. He was a loyal and hard working guy, I'm sure of it. Is he 80 yet?

I'm all for Soup whether he has play calling experience or not. What he does have is WR experience. So hopefully next year when it's 3rd & 10 or less than 2 minutes left in the game, he'll remember that we have WRs on the field and that they can make plays. So he won't run a simple draw just to punt/run the clock out.

Hayden's been gone since '98, please don't pile on the legend with the 3rd and long draw play commentary...

Soup is fine with me. Playing calling experience has to over rated Iowa offense can get no worse or more predictable. Annually one of he best Olines and zip zero projection

Everyone loves Soup, but I want someone with play calling experience.

Having someone with ZERO play calling experience is a huge risk. Play calling experience would be/should be preferred. But I have this feeling that it isn't going to matter to Ferentz. Which is ironic, as he is so risk-averse. What if they simple are not that great at it? I am not a looking forward to being 79th in the country in total offense, again.

Calling a base defense is one thing, since there are not that many options. Calling any offense is much more challenging, than a base defense. Having someone who is proven would take a load off of my shoulders. You are rolling the dice by picking someone without any play calling experience what so ever...

What about Eric Johnson? He has been with the program longer. Where is the loyalty to EJ?

Exactly he wants a stale and non exciting program here..he wants to be the one in control and calling the shots and when nothing changes over the next few years Iowa will be still .500 or below team and then we will be looking for a new HC.

Maybe someone with little to no play calling experience is exactly what we need. A large population of this board talks about how vanilla and predictable we are on offense maybe we need someone to come in that isn't that way and the defense has no idea what their rack record is or what their tendencies are.

To me the more important factors are the ability to process the information that is coming to them at a fast pace. I think where a lot of our failures were last year in particular is it seemed we were unable to adjust and make changes (Nebraska game).

Lastly, are they creative. Hayden always had an exotic for every game which was something the defense had to prepare for. Lately the most exotic play we have is a reverse that gains minus yards. Can the new guy come up with different schemes every week to exploit the mismatches? Ultimately we need to get away from "oh its just Iowa being Iowa" and maybe no experience is just what the doctor ordered.

Instead of growing a set Kirk will just go to the animal shelter and adopt a new lapp dog to take KOK's place. Same old Same old
