Kirk haters beware...

And that was almost 20 years ago. But KF also had almost 10 years as the OL coach at Iowa under Fry, and several years as OL coach in the NFL. And still he was a HC at Maine, before becoming HC at Iowa. KF's coaching experience before becoming HC at Iowa blows away BF's. It isn't even comparable, at this point. Now, if BF becomes the OC at Iowa for 5 years, that's different. But he needs to be an OC at a P5 school for 5 years or a HC for at least 3 years to prove himself.

Agree to disagree. This is where the millennials have it right because you did it one way for a gazillion years doesn't mean there isn't a more smarter, more efficient way to do things. John Harbaugh was never a coordinator, was never a head coach, but was a great hire by the Ravens. Some guys just have it and you don't need to coach at Ohio to recognize it. BF would be coaching at Iowa, not Notre Dame he would have time to figure it out. It is not like Iowa would be immune to a couple of back to back 7-5 seasons before BF "gets it."

John Harbaugh was also an assistant coach (and special teams coordinator) in college and NFL for 24 hears before he became a HC with the Ravens. That's almost as long and BF is old.

And until the "millennials" figure out a way to download experience and wisdom directly into a persons brain, you can't short cut experience and wisdom. And my point is The University of Iowa should not be a training ground for a head coach. We are better than that. We deserve better than that.

But Harbaugh was never a coordinator. So if Iowa had hired Sonny Lubrick, Ty Willingham, or Terry Allen instead of KF we would be talking about multiple national championships.:) You are right about the experience/wisdom thing;however, what you are saying is equivalent to John Henry telling Theo Epstien, "you are too young you don't get it." Some of these young cats just "get it". As I stated before it is Iowa, if you go 6-6 and lose to Iowa St. it is not the end of the world you will have time to "figure it out".

Ultimately, I think you're talking about taking a flyer. And all I am saying is take a flyer on him when he has more experience at dealing with the sh*t hitting the fan. Has BF ever been in a professional position where all roads lead to him? It's a hell of a lot brighter when the spot light only shines on you. Iowa, as a University, has reached a point where we shouldn't have to take a flyer on anyone. Hell, even Hayden had been a HC for many years.

So Bobby Diaco is the answer? I get what you are saying I am just not goint to put critieria on a guy because he did not do X,Y or Z. It just a different world than the one I grew up in you just gotta look at other factors.

I don't know if BD is ready to be a B1G HC or not. But he is at least creating a record/resume of being the only person responsible for every choice that needs to be made at UConn. And different world or not, in football, experience is still an absolute requirement to be a coach. Why didn't KF start Broderick Binns out as a defensive coordinator?

So in 2021 BB wouldn't be ready to be BF's d-coordinator or d-line coach? ;) Obviously, you are smarter than me(and i mean that sincerely) what's the difference between a 1st year BF 7-5 and I dont' know a Tom Herman 7-5?

I think we are quite a ways from needing to worry about who's next at coach... Even if he only coaches 3 or 4 more years that's still quite awhile in the football world with how fast things can change. It seems as if he's able to go out on his terms now whatever they end up being. BF will be a canidate for the job I bet. I won't say he's a leader in the club house for it though. Well maybe he in in the sense that who really knows who all would even be available when that time comes. Speculating about it is fun but man it's pretty much all it is at this point pure speculation.

BF a candidate for HC at Iowa.I will take that bet, don't think so.Hes learning from a OC that nobody wanted and he hasn't set the the world on fire with the offensive line either. He has a long way to go to be as good of a coach as our Defensive line coach is and I believe he was a better offensive line coach also.

You called me an idiot, brother. You were anonymous when you did it and your anonymity made it feel easier for you to post such a word. Nothing I wrote there was untrue, no? And calling someone an idiot is in line with what Trump does to people he doesn't agree with, so I did throw that in there. Nothing I wrote about you was nearly as bad as what you called me.

I don't like safe spaces on college campuses, they're a joke, btw.

No, hard feelings though. Let's move on.

My bad...should have thought twice before tossing that out. A bit of a tip though. Starting out a thread with a jab (be it indirect or direct) tends to invite it. All good man. Go Hawks!

I've said this before and I believe it. BF should go to a MAC school, or somewhere else, and be a head coach before he becomes a B1G head coach. Unless you've been been a coordinator for 5 years or more, you're first hc gig shouldn't be at a B1G school. No one knows if BF will or will not be a good hc. He doesn't have a track record. And for those who think BF is somehow ready to be hc because he "coached" under Belichek, go look it up. He was there for 3 seasons, but was only a position coach for 1 season, his last. He wasn't even on the field his first year and was a coaches "helper" his second.

So much wrong with this. Pat Fitzgerald even said so...

I hate to break it to you but BF's problem isn't going to be "his experience". It's going to be his ability to assemble a great staff to help him succeed at a place like Iowa, that has several built in disadvantages. Assembling a list of names to interview/hire comes from having experience at several locations with multiple coaching staffs. Even with KF's lengthy association with some of the coaching greats he worked with under Fry, he's hired a few duds (cough, Kaz...cough).
Bran Ferentz strikes out on his assistant coaches, right out of the gate and you can kiss his Iowa tenure goodbye and t could put us into football purgatory for a decade or more.
It's not as easy as some of you think. That doesn't mean that BF will fail if given the opportunity. But it's very possible. Likely even. As KF's current staff creeps closer towards retirement, he'll have to start from scratch.

A) Why is everyone assuming KF is retiring tomorrow he will be at Iowa at least til 2020 and he may even be here beyond that. At that time BF will be in his mid to late 30's.

B)When did coaching in the MAC become the solution to everything? You come get me in 5 years and tell me how Matt Campbell worked out?

C) Those inherent disadvantages you describe are the very reason why you hire BF. Who are you going to bring in who will know this state better than BF?

D) There are million different ways to build connections and/or relationships. You mean to tell me he doesn't have a list of guys in his head or on a ipad of guys he wants to bring in if/when he gets the job? Of course he does.

E) BF could very well crash and burn at Iowa. This idea of following some script or some formula of you need X amount of experience here or need to be a HC there seems dumb to me. If BF fails it will not be because he missed out coaching at Kent St.

I think people are underestimating the experience Brian gained just from being the son of a head coach. Now that's nepotism, but it is experience that can't be replicated. He has learned from everything that his Dad has gone through in the past 15+ years. He has his Dad to go to for advice. He has his Dad to go to for connections. I'm not saying he would need to go to Kirk all the time. I don't think he would need to, but having that as an option is not a bad thing.

Coaches will come work with BF because they know who he is and what he's about. They know what the Iowa program is about. They know this is a major B10 program so the opportunity is excellent. They know what kind of football BF is going to want to play. That's why Phil Parker has been at Iowa for so long. That's why Norm stayed at Iowa for so long. That's why Reese Morgan has been at Iowa for so long. Those are some extremely high quality assistant coaches who wanted to be at Iowa simply because they enjoyed working for Kirk, and they fit in well with the culture of this state.

Nope. That can't be a factor he was never a head coach anywhere and he never dialed up plays. Apparently, KF is retiring tomorrow so BF has to put together a staff next week with no connections whatsoever.

Frankly I think it's idiotic for anyone to say that he would have trouble getting assistant coaches to come work for him. The guy has connections everywhere. He would be able to put together a solid team of coaches.

I have no idea why Arvada and GrandpaHawk among others are acting like this would be such a huge stretch. He's been around football his entire life. He knows football arguably better than anyone else his age. What positions he has or hasn't held in the past really has little to do with it. He has the demeanor, the mindset, and the leadership capabilities that it takes to be a head coach. I guarantee you if Iowa doesn't hire him to be one some day then someone else will. I'm not saying he's going to be Iowa's head coach. I'm not even saying that he necessarily deserves it, but what I am saying is that if he were to be given the job I would trust that he was given it because EVERYONE in and around the program believed he was ready for it. I would trust them a hell of a lot more than I would trust some loudmouth on a message board demanding that he get at least 5 years of experience as an OC.

Brian ferentz needs to show he can run the show at a smaller school before he is even thought of to be iowas head coach. I don't care if he's been around ball his whole life. Their's way too many moving parts to learn on the job especially in a market like iowa which gets so much media attention.
