Kirk Ferentz Presser Notes (FINAL)

Disappointing to see DeAndre Johnson hasn't been able to work his way in the mix and is now behind Bullock. Regardless, Coker will be exponentially better if we can develop a nice compliment to his style. Who would have thought that an injury to our number 2 running back in the first game of the year could be the difference between 6 wins and 9 wins?!

Did KF say anything about the overall morale of the team?

Guess I missed the part where we were guaranteed to win 9 and that were now guaranteed 6 wins. And definitely missed the part where that was all based on losing McCall for the season. Care to elaborate?

I didn't realize the #2 RB would be playing D, that is going to be the difference between 6 or 9 wins. The offense is going to be fine without McCall.

I'm glad he recognizes Coker isn't there yet at least...and I'm not talking about the fumble.

He's not running with much vision or fluidity in my opinion...this stop and cut crap just allows teams to pursue and stop you from the backside. I watched the game again and he missed some serious lanes and was caught by the pursuing LB because he didn't make a decision and get up field. He finished some runs and got that forward lean, but he's not making the most of the blocking he's getting.

No wins are guaranteed. There's not a game on the schedule other than Louisiana Monroe that Iowa is guaranteed to win. But I also think every game on the schedule is winnable. McCall is a huge, huge loss, particularly given our limitations on D. Iowa had chances to open up a bigger lead on Saturday, but settled for field goals. That's been part of the M.O. the last couple of years - offense with a chance to stretch a lead, can't do it, then the defense can't hang on. The D, while not playing great, didn't start getting torched until we finally got up 7 late in the 4th. I think there were some plays out there Saturday that Coker left on the field that could have gone for some big yardage - not saying McCall would have been in there for those plays. And what a nice 1-2 punch those two would be against any D. Obviously the team has a lot of improvement all the way around, both offensively and defensively. That being said, it's not as bad as it seems. There's still talent on both sides of the ball, and just about every team left on our schedule has as many question marks as we do in some way or another.

I hear ya and get what your saying. I just happen to be one of those guys that can't stand to put a win-loss label on a team this early in the season, or at any point in the season for that matter.

Schleprock Erb strikes again. When he was coaching receivers guys dropped out if the program or regressed, now he is coaching backs and the same thing happens. Dude is just bad luck.

But with Coker I think it goes further and your post is a sign of what I have seen. Excessive focus on getting his pads down has really messed with Coker's performance. He is running way too tight, because he is running crouched over. This helps with his lean at the end of runs, but messes with his fluidity and vision.

KF needs to step in and tell Lester to just let him run.

Shonn Greene thought a lot early in the 2008 campaign...and then he got a lot better as the season went on once he started reading and reacting, and showed patience. I think Coker has the patience thing down..it will come to him.

I think this is going to be a much different team by the time they go to PSU than they are right now...offensively.
