Kirk Ferentz on not playing backup QBs: No regrets

yeah, his memory is fading i guess.

I struggle to understand how throwing 15-20 passes the year before dictates whether a new starting QB will be successful. Will they be more comfortable in their fist start? I would think so but I fail to see why those 15-20 passes are going to be outcome determinate for the year as a whole.

Gee, for over a year we kept hearing how lucky we were to have Vandenberg as a backup to Stanzi after he got thrown into the fire against Ohio St. and Minnesota after Ricki's injury. People pointed to that experience as being a positive one for Vandenberg having real game exposure. Don't understand how getting into a real game and gathering some playing time could be a negative. But obviously to Ferentz, last year it would have been. There was no way we were going to win some of those games and really, he was exposing Vandenberg to possible injuries by playing him in mop up time.

“Not really,â€￾ Ferentz said. “To me, our focus was winning every game, every situation. I mean, you look around last year, Texas A. and M. did fine with a new quarterback. We played a new quarterback in 2002, 2003 and 2004, and did fine. So that won’t be a reason for us not doing well.â€￾

Um coach, Banks got reps in 2001, Chandler got reps in 2002, and Tate got reps in 2003.

Might not have been the best examples to use.

Tate tossed 11 balls the year before. I would be hesitant to say that that experience was what lead to his successes the next year. I'd think it had plenty more to do with his talents. Who knows Ruddock, Sokol, or Beathard doesn't have the same. Time will tell.

The fact the KF was the only coach in all of college football who didn't let a backup take one snap all season very clearly shows how stupid it was. Case closed.

so you saying those angry with kf over not playing another qb have "an axe to grind" last year is somehow not defending kf? Ok guy

No...I'm saying the small few that offer nothing except the same yammer that KF has completely forgot how to coach no matter what the topic have an ax to grind...

I have multiple times, dozens even, noted that I share peoples frustrations on select weaknesses of KF...mainly clock management gaffes, loyalty to non performing players, possibly overconservatism at times...and possibly the GD hire (although I will reserve judgement and give it another year). The man isn't infallible and I fully admit it. I have also noted adnausium that 6 or fewer wins is unacceptable (see signature).

I do however think KF can develop players and coach as good as anyone and his pros out way his cons...provided we get back to 7-8 wins on the norm. His legacy will ultimately be determined in the next 2-3 years. Another 4 win season I am all for a change. Hardly the views of the "biggest KF apologist on this board"

The nepotism and salary gripes are played out and ignorant.

Don't call me out unless you have more than one broad statement that was nothing but true...albeit backhanded.

End game "drops mic"

I didn't understand it either. But really doesn't show that it was "stupid". Its likely much about nothing. This was a subjective decision by KF and GD that I nor others agreed with, but I also don't think 20-30 snaps in which he hands the ball off 10-15 times offers Ruddock next to nothing. If JR isn't the starter this year its even more moot.

Funny how quiet you kirk fans were during the season. Then couple months of no football goes by and you go back to thinking hes a good coach. He was never a good coach. Norm was an amazing coach. The smoke and mirrors are gone. Who knows maybe he can get a stud like Brad Banks or Shonn Greene and get a 8 or 9 win season. Thatll show us.

Fact is Iowa has a pretty good defense right now but not like some of Norms defenses. So the defense might win a couple games this year but it wont be enough to make kirk look good. At least to those that understand football.

Norm was the man, we can agree on that, and his defenses made the team good, sometimes great. When you sprinkled in a little offense...those were the teams we all wish were the norm(see what I did there).

Look, we both want the Hawks to do well...and fricken hate when they are below avg or worse.

I absolutely agree KF has some weaknesses...I just don't believe he's this awful coach that you do. Another 4 win season or a couple below avg seasons...KF will be gone sooner rather later. I know nothing will change your mind and that's cool as at the end of the day all we want are fun, successful seasons and hope for maybe a dream season or two.

I'll do my thing, you do yours, we'll jab at each other on here occasionally and watch some Hawkeye football in the process.

..at least those of us that understand football will...:)
