Kirk Ferentz on not playing backup QBs: No regrets

Pretty good example to use I would say...its who I would use to make a point.

That's great. Now do honestly think we have anyone like that on the roster right now? Yeah, me neither. So why even bring it up when you know damn well we don't? Does no good to use an outlier like that.

He also mentioned Iowa's own previous situations. No head coach worth his salt is going to waste time worrying or regretting decisions made last year. Would a few appearances by Rudock last year really change the situation this year?? I don't think so.

Sokol and Beathard were redshirting so they were definitely not going to play. Keep on beating the horse if you want but it is already dead!!!

I still stand by we would of just set JR back if he was played late with that beat up o-line.

His point is probably more along the lines of " if a first year guy is capable of doing that, its possible our first year guy can play at least decent".

The difference between Johnny Football and the current situation is that Johnny Football outright won the starting job as a RS Freshman. There isn't a clear cut leader right now and it doesn't look like there is going to be a "Johnny Football" on this team, unless all three are that good and they can't decide who has the edge. I am going with the first one, there just isn't a Johnny Football type player.

"We played a new quarterback in 2002, 2003 and 2004, and did fine. So that won’t be a reason for us not doing well.”

Having said that Coach, if we have another crappy season I hope you don't drag out the "Well, we're playing a new QB this year so it will take some time to adjust" excuse.

Bingo...

But those with ax to grind find such statements an offense to there sensibilities.

He would never come out and say that. He would say something like "we are inexperienced at some key positions but those guys are working hard and improving every week". KF is too cagey to be pinned down like that. But it will essentially be the same excuse.

Says probably the biggest KF apologist on the board. It goes both ways.

Apologist ? Lol. Oh well...worse things to be called I guess....even if inaccurate.

If we don't improve by 2-3 wins next year and by 3+ the following KF will likely need to*go...doesn't change the fact that his success in the past is proof he can coach.

But please...carry on

“Not really,â€￾ Ferentz said. “To me, our focus was winning every game, every situation. I mean, you look around last year, Texas A. and M. did fine with a new quarterback. We played a new quarterback in 2002, 2003 and 2004, and did fine. So that won’t be a reason for us not doing well.â€￾

Um coach, Banks got reps in 2001, Chandler got reps in 2002, and Tate got reps in 2003.

Might not have been the best examples to use.

Nope. But if we were going to lose those games anyway, why not get the backup(s) some experience? It might change the situation for THIS year.
