Kirk Ferentz: Living Legend

Well, that was definitely a pro Ferentz love fest piece. Ferentz is a coach you can love and respect, but can drive you deeply up the wall at the same time on game day. He is racking up a lot of participation ribbons/trophies, but he is keeping Iowa competitive at the same time. It could be a lot worse. I don't know if I would go as far and say legend, but he has been relatively successful in his years at Iowa. But, he has underachieved in regards to what he is paid annually.

Wasn't it 3 years ago Jon was thinking it was time for KF to hang it up, and wanted him fired? Now he's a living legend... Quite the turn around..

For the past 3 years, the biggest turnaround I saw was Jimbo Fisher's hairline.
This article, at least, earned honorable mention.

THIS is exactly the issue, and people rarely talk about it enough.

He is the 13th highest paid coach in the nation, and he has finished in the top 25 at year-end only 6 of his 19 seasons.. (half of which were in 02-04 -- 13 years ago).

An edit to add: I do think Ferentz is a living legend simply by having coach for nearly two decades. But to say he hasnt underachieved with the time given and salary paid would be lying.

I think what KF did from when he was hired to 2005 may put him as a legend had it stopped there.

He put together an all time staff, and we reaped those benefits from the 2005-2006 recruiting classes. That produced our 2008-2009-2010 teams, albeit the 2010 was a huge disappointment. Injuries and coaching, but coaching especially since KF has never been the best at adapting.

I think the City Boyz issue changed KF. After that happened he went extremely conservative with his recruiting, specifically the WR position. And we went even more conservative in our play.

If you watch the team from 2000-2006, it's not the same offense. It wasn't 3 yards and a cloud of dust. It wasn't audible to short side of the field, and Fair Catch every punt.

We've been playing lucky ball, or play not to lose for way too long and that's where KF has lost me. Doesn't change the fact what he did to turn the program around, and then give us almost three years of outstanding football later on. Plus a BCS win.

KF and HF were opposites though. HF didn't beat the big boys as much as KF did (and KF did very well against UM, PSU, and MSU)

HF absolutely beat the piss out of the bad teams. Something KF struggles with.

So it's probably a wash. Both are legends. Both gave us great times. I think it's time for KF to move on though....and please don't hire his son

Brian will succeed him. I guarantee it. In fact everyone will applaud it. Everyone in the media. Every fan. Every booster. Everyone in the Athletic Dept. EVERYONE.
And that will have a negative effect on KF's legacy . . . BF will have the same impact on Iowa football that Evy had as athletic director.

Well, we know damn well everyone in the media will applaud it.

The people who might disapprove are so small in number and powerless by nature that statistically they might as well not exist. The previous sentence explains everything about the current state of a program that is incrementally sliding backwards as time moves forward.

I only read the first page of this. I knew it wouldn't take long for the losers to come out of the woodwork and tear down the person they hate the most in the world for not winning B1G championships every other year and daring not to beat ISU regularly. The article was about being a very good coach and a great person in case you didn't catch that nuance, losers.

You are a work man. This isn't about hate. It's about making him a legend, which he isn't...yet. It wasn't about a "very good coach". A coach can be very good and not a legend.

Did you read the article? Didn't think so.

I read the article. Maybe you didn't read the thread title? If you can't read that, how can you read the article? So you apparently didn't read the article nor did you read the title which btw since you didn't read it or comprehend it (no way to tell), you didn't know the author of the article is the same guy who posted the tread and also ended the article.

Can't read for comprehension? didn't think so.

The term 'living legend' gets tossed around a lot. For me a 'living legend' must inspire people & leave near unattainable legacies. In my opinion, Kirk Ferentz has done these things & is a living legend. Oh, and he is a good football coach, too. Column:

https://www.hawkeyenation.com/football/kirk-ferentz-is-in-a-league-of-his-own

Is this a joke? The guy went 7-5 and barely won a shite bowl game and we are saying he is a living legend?? Lmfao. He had one good season in the last 7 because of an easy schedule and CJ beathard.

Is there some incentive for you to write articles like this about ferentz? Don't rock the boat type mentality? Shame

Nice article, Jon.

For me Fry will always have a slight edge on the field, as he took an embarrassingly inept program and rebuilt it from the ground up in nearly every aspect. (something that yes...you had to be there to understand). What Kirk and Mary have done off the field is exceptional.

Clearly IOWA is fortunate to have had both of these guys at
Agent only part of it. Again my opinion REGENT+BOOSTERS RUN SHIP.Desire Power and Money from ad and hc.Image +Gold do the talking.OBSERVATION of life.Yo.pray for surf huh?

Something changed but I don’t think it was the City Boyz .......KF got complacent and “Iowa is a developmental program” became a crutch.
