Kirk Ferentz is a Great Man

I recently attended a Variety Club function in Des Moines. Variety is a charity that benefits underprivileged children. Ferentz and his wife drove from Iowa City and attended the event. They signed autographs, stood for hundreds of photographs, and then Coach Ferentz gave a talk about football and life. This was all done right in the middle of recruiting season.

The charity raised well over $100,000 that night.

Why don't these ******** in the media report on these events?

Easy! Kirk doesn't want it that way...it's not why he does it.

If you are going to report the negative, you have an obligation as a journalist to report on the positive. I'm reporting on the positive.

I certainly agree that Ferentz doesn't do the positive things he does for publicity. He does it because he is a good man.

you are completely out of your mind, and that's saying a lot. message boards are typically where the more radical nonsensical type of fans tend to gather, but holy god man. take a step back for a minute.

Perhaps it is you who should take a step back, man. Or maybe you've never heard of such legal realities as libel, slander and defamation. Perhaps, in fact, if all this makes you nervous, you should step all the way back to Ames where they've never heard of this sort of thing either. It can get pretty complicated for those of tiny brains.

Great OP. Kirk has a very strong reputation for attending events and slipping in and out of town with little or no fanfare.

I will always remember the story (I think it was posted to this site a couple of years ago) about Kirk being at a basketball game and taking the time for individual photos with a group of special needs adults. The poster said she was overseeing a group of special needs adults and she saw Kirk at the game but was hesitant to approach him because she did not want to seem like a nuisance. Because she knew how excited the individuals would be, she approached Kirk and asked if they could take a group photograph.

Kirk not only obliged but even suggested doing one on one photos with each individual. People forget: Kirk doesn't have to do many of the positive things he does for the state of Iowa. He just goes about his business and overall, is just a great human being.

Yes, I know Kirk is making a lot of money and along with that comes public speaking obligations, etc. But Kirk takes a step further. Taking the time for individual and groups and making appearances for several different causes.

I like that about Kirk. I had the chance to meet Kirk at a FanFest event a few years back. I was attending the event with my dad and two of my brothers. Kirk actually walked up to us and just started talking. Asking where we were from and offering to pose for a group photo. Kirk is genuine. And for Hawkeye nation, that is why we have a hard time seeing Kirk come under fire from the national pundits. Yes, it is obvious the university mishandled the press conference, etc. But we know Kirk as a human being.

Kirk does not run a shady program. Evidence comes from many of his former players who have come out in support of Kirk, the coaches and the program.

It is unfortunate the national talking heads like to fan the flames until they turn into an inferno.

Kirk is a genuine great guy. How many times have we heard Kirk choke up immediately at the end of the game when a reporter catches him on the field to ask him about the win.

What surprises me is that many of the same national talking heads who have crucified Kirk are the same ones in the past who have lauded him as a head coach and how he runs the program. But it is easier to jump on the bandwagon along with everyone else and keep the story in the spotlight.

To even suggest the players were being "punished" for how the season ended is absolutely ridiculous. Hopefully this will all soon blow over after Wednesday. The media will do as it always does ... move onto the next "controversy." That seems to be the nature of society ... try to knock down those at the top. Kirk does it right. His coaches do it right. If I was sending my kid to play college football and he had the opportunity to play for Kirk -- I would be honored ... And I know know my son would be a better human being for it.
