Kirk Apparently Didn't Realize They Could Have Tied Game With 2pt Conversion

I wonder if he thought the question was about the very end of the game where they made the field goal?

I don't think so, the reporter was clear about the time and situation, the only possible thing I could think of was he was saying we needed to score twice to win and not talking about the tie. Either way it was dumb and it's all over Twitter so not a good look

Reporter even said "it's 14-6"

It is pretty silly, especially considering it was by far the best drive of the game. Not exactly a score at will type of game.

It is baffling to me that he coaches to keep it close where one play can decide it, yet is so unwilling to ever take a chance when it comes down to that one play

Watch the actual interview Morehouse posted. Reporter said 5 mins left, 14-6 at the 20 and Ferentz looked like a deer in headlights answering the question. He definitely was not confusing it with the end of the game

I think he was referring to the 2 point conversion.

That said, why does Iowa pay so much for a developmental coach?

We were very baffled in the stands because so late in a game where your offense is not scoring or not moving the ball you have to try to extend the drive and get the tying TD and 2 pts to tie it. Early in the game take the FG. As some coaches who take a chance have said when you take a chance early in the game you have time to overcome a bad outcome.

And even if the hawks came up a few yards short in this situation you are still only 8 points , one score down, and wisky takes the ball inside their 20.

Hey, I don't defend ferentz very often, but I believe he meant 2 scores to win. so, i see the logic in kicking the fg. plus, if you don't get a first down or touchdown, the game is over. at least if you make the fg, you get the opportunity for the onside kick. Then, a touchdown wins.

No way. You go for the TD. Even with the FG you needed another touchdown to win, so you go for the touchdown
when you have a chance. And the game wasn't over if you do not get the td. Iowa had to stop Wisconsin either way to have a chance to win.

i had no problem with the call there, you take the points
How many points did we end up taking? Yup, we were supposed to assume he would make the kick and then our defense would magically stop Wisconsin after they had already controlled the ball for 70% of the game clock. Bull crap. You try to score a TD when you have a chance to tie the game. Same goes with kicking the FG with 45 seconds to go to get within 8. Try to score the td there.

I wish that he would realize that he isn't going to reach the next level with a bunch of 2 star recruits.....but what does he care when all that is expected is 7-5....I'm gonna be sick now!!!

The 3rd down play call was worse than the FG decision. 3rd and 5 and they try to throw to McCarron up the seem. That was clearly two down territory in that situation. Stack the receivers and hand it off to Wadley.

I don't think so either. It's just when you hear something so dumb, you grasp at straws to try to explain it. You're right tho, it was in reference to a win, not a tie.

Iowa goes for it, scores a touchdown, and makes the two pointer, they're tied at 14-14.

Iowa goes for it, scores a touchdown, and misses the two pointer, they're down 14-12. They kick off with 3:00 minutes or so left. They need to stop Wisconsin, with the wind at their back, they need to get to Wisconsin's 35 yard line or so with a chance to win the game with a 52 yard FG. Recinos was practicing those at halftime (and making them).

Iowa goes for it, doesn't make it. Wisconsin takes over. Iowa needs to stop them, and then score a TD with the two point extra point for the tie.

Iowa doesn't go for it, kicks a FG and makes it, they're down 14-9. They need to stop Wisconsin, and score a TD.

Iowa doesn't go for it, kicks a FG and misses it, they're down 14-6. They need to stop Wisconsin and score a TD with the two point extra point for the tie.

Definitely too much math to process. Under 4 of these scenarios, they needed to stop Wisconsin and score a TD. They couldn't stop Wisconsin. That's why they should have gone for it, I think.

no surprise there. here are just a few of the many other things he doesn't know...
-You can blitz corners, LBs, and safeties
-You can sub players out, situationally (so your LBs don't have to cover quick WRs on 3rd and 12)
-You can have more than 5 plays in your playbook
-You can run play-action pass
-You can run to the long side of the field instead of the short side
-You can pass on a down other than 3rd
-You can throw the ball more than 8 yrds down the field.
-You can throw the ball past the sticks
-You can spread the field (and actually take a slow TE or Fullback off the field)
-You don't have to wait 35 seconds to send in the offensive play
-You can play an underclassman before an upperclassman.

Have you guys even watched the video? It's pretty obvious Ferentz is not even listening when the reporter repeats the time and score. Ferentz thought he was talking about the end of game FG, locked into that, and ignored everything else the reporter said so he could do his Belichick thing of just repeating his answer over and over. It still makes Ferentz look like an idiot but lol if you're actually so stupid that you think he doesn't understand that 8 points is a one score game.

I believe KF considers a close loss = a win in contract negotiations. He can say "we were a couple of plays away from this or that".
If only he were as good at selling Iowa to recruits as he is at selling himself to Barta.

Your first point is ridiculous. He understood the question in its entirety.

I mean seriously, what is the argument for actually thinking that Ferentz doesn't understand that 8 points is a one score game? That he has Alzheimers? He's been a football coach for decades, you honestly think he forgot that? I'm being 100% serious - in what world is it more realistic that he doesn't understand what the number 8 is vs he just wasn't paying attention because he doesn't give a shit about the postgame press conference? Use your noggin people...
