Kinnick Memories

Anyone have some kinnick memories?

Here are mine....I have been going to games since 2nd Grade (1975).

1) Mid 70's (I think 76 or may be the one game in 75 I went to) man and woman without a stitch on ran Streaking hand in hand from the NW corner all the way down the field to the SOuth endzone. I believe this was the NW game and as a third grader considered the only score of the game.

2) Anyone remember "BUD MAN" in the late 70's early 80's. It was a guy dressed up in a budweiser superhero costume sorta like captain america. He was always running around in the North endzone stands.

3) Ahhh the scottich Highlanders.

4) I was at "the Kick" game I saw about 50 boyscouts get creamed by a wave of Iowa fans. Bad idea using boyscouts to guard the goalposts and field.

Soo many memories.

Best memory is when Iowa hosted Miami, even though we got blowed out it was the first game my dad took me to and the power went out. Miami literally played lights out.

The reception the Hawks will get when they come out of the tunnel Saturday. The place should be just electric, anyone not on their feets just going crazy should forfeit their tickets.

Good one. I was at that NW game ...streaking is so retro.
My 70's memories were heavily skewed by the ability to easily smuggle a sixpack into the game...we would sit on the grass in the corners and drink beer and enjoy the futility.
The best one was the huge win...45-28 over Wisky in the late 70's...we ran on the field and were under the influence of many substances that made the astroturf feel like we were running on a marshmallow...don't remember much more from that one either...good times.

21-10 win over UCLA in 1974. Bob Cummings second game, think its the only time I stormed the field. Alcohol was about the only thing that made the 70's bearable. Cost $3 to sit in the end zone.

Snow game against Minnesota in 1991, think there were only 25,000 people. They didn't even open the south endzone because of the ice and snow.

Going to games in the late 60's with my grandfather and father...sitting in the "knothole" seats in the southwest corner.........

Late '60s...early '70s.......

My dad used to deliver the hot dog and hamburger buns to the stadium and he would sneak my brother and I in. One day we were goofing around throwing paper airplanes from the top row out of the stadium (this was HOURS before kickoff) and promptly getting escorted out by one of Iowa City's finest....got to ride in the press box elevator. We pooled our money for my brother to buy a knothole ticket so he could get in and find my dad to get ME back in.

Sitting in the end zone and switching ends every quarter (to whichever end zone the opposing team was headed) to try and catch the ball on XP's and FG's. I caught one once....had to give it back.

Climbing under the bleachers in the south end zone. Lots of empty liquor bottles, but I found a transistor radio shaped like an STP can once. Worked great...had it for years.

Found an "offical" football in the stands with "Iowa" stamped on it. Must have been left from a practice. Dad helped me smuggle it out. I still have it...40 years later.

My brother claims I once threw a snowball at Woody Hayes and knocked his hat off, and he (my brother, not Woody) threw a snowball that hit Archie Griffin in the face. I do not happen to remember doing this.

Awesome posts!! I had the privelege of seeing Chuck Long (MSU game) fake the handoff to Ronnie Harmon at the goal line....I also had the privelege of seeing Harmon flying over the top of the line well into the end zone (without the ball). I DID NOT have the privelege of seeing Long trot into the end zone, as I was flat on my back getting hugged and mobbed by those around me. I will never forget that day.

From what I've witnessed.....
1. Knowing the outcome of the Michigan-Ohio St. game and rushing the field as Big Ten Champs in 04 vs. Wisconsin was awesome. Amazing Hawkeye moment.
2. Entrance for the 06 Ohio st. game. wow.
3. Senior Day 04, Matt Roth coming on the field.
4. Many more I just can't think well

Bobby Stoops surgically disecting Anthony Carter's kidney during a crossing route on about the 44 yardline. Cart was helped off the field and didnt return that day.

My first game at Kinnick was the Miami game in 92. I remember that the most of any I attended as a student because it was my first, as well as the first night game in Kinnick. However, I am looking forward to this week's game more than about anything in the world right now. I don't get to make it to many games anymore since I work on Saturday's but I am coming over on Saturday and bringing my 8 year old son to his first game at Kinnick. Getting to experience a game during this magical season is great, but getting to do it with him and hopefully creating a memory for both of us to cherish the rest of our lives tops everything else.

In '04 my best friend and I were sitting in the NE corner (his season tix before the reseating) and we were about 25 at the time the Hawks were playing Wisconsin for the Big Ten title, and a bunch of bluehairs kept telling us to sit down and that the student section was across the field if I wanted to stand.

As Iowa started pummeling the Badgers and every started to realize we were going to win the title they all stood up and a couple of the blue hairs even stormed the field with my friend and I after the game. It was so chaotic we didn't really know what was going on and all of a sudden my friend go pushed into me and we saw 6-7 state troopers shoving their way off the field leading Kirk off.

The two of us turned just in time to touch the Big Ten Championship trophy as it went by.

First game I attended with my Dad was in 1960. Yikes!. Too many great memories to pick one out. I will say this I lived through the Hawkeyes going 20 years wirthout a winning season, was present when harden coached his first home game for Iowa, saw Iowa beat Michigan State to go to the Rose Bowl under Hayden etc. etc. So whatever happens this year to me is gravy after going through those 20 bad years.

My dad and I used to park downtown, eat dollar microwave burgers at the QT, then take the Cambus over toward Kinnick. I have very few Iowa football memories that could top that (until I have my own kids to start taking to games, I imagine).

I remember the first game that my dad took me to. The thing I remember most is thinking how cool my dad was for letting me eat a hot dog at 8:00 in the morning.

I was in the HMB during my four years at Iowa, and hand-down best memory of Kinnick was the run-on for the '06 pregame show. I remember getting to my spot and flipping around to see the home sideline completely packed with gold and screaming so loud I couldn't hear the whistles or drumline (that was only 5 yards away!) to kickoff "On Iowa."

'04 Wiscy game also ranks up there, as does the '03 Michigan game.

I think my best Kinnick memory will come this weekend when my dad and I get to see the 8-0 hawkeyes take back Kinnick.

History in the making.....

Yep. 38,000 people and recall #3 doing a snow angel in the end zone after he scored. You will also recall that the refs did not measure if it was close. The offense got the benefit of the doubt and they'd just signal 1st down. Weird day but fun.
