Killing the Vibe?

According to Shawn Terrill of WHO13 in Des Moines he stated that the recent arrests with JH, JB, and now BB have "killed" the good vibe going into this season. Put me down as one of the people who doesn't feel the vibe has been killed. To be honest, it's barely been tempered. Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy with the arrests but at most these three guys will get 2 game suspensions. We are at least three deep at RB so JH doesn't hurt too much. There isn't even certainty that JB will start this year with Micah Hyde pushing him, and BB hurts however he was just one of four of one of the best DLs in the country. Assuming they all sit two games I still think we win both going away. I don't agree with his appraisal of the situation at all.

It sucks and is very irritating, but it hardly takes the buzz off the season.

It's not like we are opening the season with Alabama? The schedule helps our cause and who knows maybe this puts a gigantic chip on those 3 athletes shoulders. You would think they have something to really prove now even more than before?

Especially Binns. He's going to be looking at possibly entering the draft after this year. His stock will never be higher and even though he will be a senior next year he will be surrounded by three new Dlineman. I fully expect him leaving unless he gets injured or has a bad year. Getting suspended a game or two definately doesn't help his cause.

I don't think the point is that a few players missing a few games is all that damaging. Its more of a morale issue. Frustration and negativity can easily infect a team...not saying that has happened...but it is something to keep a close eye on.

I'm guessing that you wouldn't have had the same opinion last year when Hampton blew out his knee, Bernstein broke his ankle, and Calloway got pinched.

I was talking with my dad about this last night, and he said it "not a good omen." I reminded him about all of those things that happened last year, and then asked him how the team ended up doing.

I think any time he's going to miss is overblown as well. Bulaga missed what 3, 4 games last year, and still got picked in the first round.

Not saying this is going to kill the dream, but there's a difference between rallying the team around some injuries and knowing you're a few guys down who are perfectly healthy, due to their off the field stupidity...

Yeah, I thought about that as soon as I hit send, but I think the principal is still the same. Last year at this time the team had to rally around two guys who had never seen any playing time, as opposed to an experienced runner who had seen a lot of action. Human nature says you're going to be skeptical.

We all ready that Hampton and...I forget who else it was.. aren't going to miss any time, and Binns at the most is going to miss two. I'd like to think that the core of this team - that has been together since 2008 - is made of stern enough stuff that missing Binns for two games isn't going to be that big of a deal.

I agree, it should be the same...but I keep coming back to how it works where I work...if we know we're going to be a man down because of a vacation or an appointment, we rally...when someone decides they're not coming in on a Monday because they had too much weekend, we're all pissy about having to do more...but I hope you're right and this isn't going to matter to them.

Edit: Now that I think about it though...we may get pissy, but we still get the job done! I'm feeling better about this already!

I think the real loss in momentum could be in recruiting. Another couple of screw upsand it could be an issue used against us.

Good points, SR! I just hope the arrest season is over with and the guys start getting their heads into what's in front of them from here on out.

Great point...except we're not in Tennessee and it has nothing to do with Iowa and their having a shot at their first ever BCS title.

Edit: No one is saying Binns or Hampton or Bernstine should be kicked off of the team for their infractions...just that it's a concern, that it's not something the staff and team should be having to deal with heading into what could be an historical season.

It only kills the vibe if you're a member of the media trying to drum up attention to yourself. These types of things add up to nothing more than negative attention to the program. I don't like it one bit, but it's only as big of a deal as you make it. I used to let myself get riled up over these things, and listening to Cyclone fans completely exaggerate the situation used to upset me. I guess I've grown up a little bit and realized what's the point? Kids will be kids and when they drink alcohol they will make stupid decisions. I understand it would be nice if they learned their lesson when they see one of their peers make the mistake but it's different. When I was that age it didn't matter what happened to my friends I thought I was invincible... I never really learned the lesson until it happened to me. Lets hope these 3 will learn from it.

Obviously I would never wish this type of negative publicity on the Hawks, but I honestly think Binns missing a game or two will end up being a good thing for the depth of the D-line. He's a seasoned player and I don't doubt he'll return with something to prove. The players behind him need the experience and this is their opportunity to get it. If someone goes down later in the season these reps they receive will be valuable. The Hampton and Bernstein case however is not good for either player or the team. Both guys need in-game reps badly and because of their decision they won't have a chance to get them early in the season. Bernstein's lack of reps could easily cost him a starting position.
